Job Details:General NotesThe Briscoe Center for American History seeks a visionary leader to manage its photography collections, which are growing rapidly in volume, caliber, and institutional significance. As a leading history research center, we collect, preserve, and make available archival evidence that encompasses key themes in US history. Our photography collections serve as inspiration for many of the center’s own research projects, exhibitions, public programs, and publications.

PurposeThe Director of Photography Collections will assume a key leadership role at the center, overseeing the care, description, cataloging, and promotion of the center’s growing photographic collections. The ideal candidate will bring an ability to work proactively and collaboratively, as well as a willingness to perform both high-level and ground-level tasks.

Responsibilities

Oversee the care, description, cataloging, and promotion of the center’s photographic collections. Develop and implement policies and procedures for the acquisition, cataloging, and documentation of the center’s photography collections. Lead the day-to-day operations and programmatic activities of the photography unit, including the inventory, processing, and housing of all current and incoming collections. Supervise 3 FTE professional staff and student interns.

Build and advance relationships with current and potential collection donors, including photographers and collectors.

Work with Briscoe Center’s archival registrar to document accessions and oversee storage of collections.

Coordinate licensing of the center’s photography and permissions with photographers and donors.

Enhance collaboration with the University's academic programs by leveraging the Briscoe Center’s photography collections.

Serve on the Briscoe Center’s Administrative Committee and collaborate with leadership to implement the center’s vision and goals.

Act as a spokesperson for the center’s photographic holdings to enhance its visibility and reputation.

Collaborate with the center’s exhibitions program and assist in selecting materials for exhibitions.

Collaborate with the Center’s Development Officer to determine fundraising needs.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in American history, American Studies, Information Science, or related fields.

Documented experience working with photographs as historical evidence, particularly news and documentary photography.

Six years of related work experience, including two years of managerial experience.

Superior written and oral communication skills.

Strong time management and organizational skills.

Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Strong commitment to working with donors, students, faculty, and the public.

Proven ability to manage multiple internal and external relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in American History or American Studies.

Several years of experience in archival or museum leadership.

Knowledge of the history of photography and collections management policies.

Experience in curation of photography exhibitions.

Experience in processing collections and working with digital assets.

Salary Range$80,000

Working Conditions

May work around standard office conditions.

Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.

Climbing of ladders and lifting up to 50lbs.

Regular travel as needed.
