Old Sturbridge Village, the largest outdoor living history museum in New England, seeks a dynamic and visionary Vice President of Development, who will be a key member of the Village’s senior management team. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Vice President of Development, will direct all of the Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) development initiatives including expanding donor base, enhancing and increasing membership, growing business partnerships and sponsorships, securing major gifts and philanthropic donations, building the Annual Fund and overseeing grants and foundation outreach for exhibitions, special events, capital projects, for Old Sturbridge Village, Coggeshall Farm Museum, and three Charter Schools.

This newly created role, with the support of the Chief Advancement Officer and development staff, will create an environment where the Vice President can be most successful working in tandem with OSV’s President to work with top donors and prospects to reach the organizations goals. The Vice President will be a strong leader who can articulate both the challenges and the possibilities of funding opportunities, craft a compelling and actionable strategy that galvanizes the Board of Trustee’s engagement, and facilitates the open dialogue needed to leverage the diverse expertise of the Trustees to reach aggressive development goals. The Vice President will lead all stewardship activities related to the Village’s key stakeholders, building a relationship journey that includes visitors, members, donors, as well as corporate and foundational partners. The individual should have a passion for history, education, and the unique immersive experience that Old Sturbridge Village provides, along with the ability to translate that passion into compelling fundraising narratives and sustainable financial support. This role will contribute to Old Sturbridge Village’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

The successful candidate for the Vice President of Development will be an inclusive leader and manager of the highest integrity, with the ability to motivate, inspire, and unite staff and stakeholders around a shared vision.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Relationship Cultivation and Networking—Ability to leverage personal and professional networks to identify and engage potential donors; Experience in creating and executing strategic donor cultivation plans for high-net-worth individuals, corporations and institutions; Capacity to inspire and motivate others to become active advocates and fundraisers for the organization

Technology and Multichannel Fundraising—Experience with CRM systems and digital fundraising platforms; Knowledge of data analytics for donor tracking and campaign optimization; Experience with various fundraising channels (e.g., direct mail, email, social media, events); Ability to create integrated campaigns across multiple platforms

Cross-functional Collaboration—Ability to work effectively with other departments (e.g., program, curatorial, education, operations as well as the others in the Advancement Department including marketing, sales, communications) to align fundraising efforts with overall organizational goals

Crisis Management and Public Relations—Experience in fundraising during challenging times or economic downturns; Ability to pivot strategies in response to unforeseen circumstances; Comfort with public speaking and representing the organization at high-level events; Public/Media relations experience

Ethical Fundraising—Strong understanding of fundraising ethics and best practices; Familiarity with relevant laws and regulations governing non-profit fundraising

Financial and Performance Metrics—Familiar with specific KPIs or metrics a VP at a similar institution would be responsible for achieving; Experience in setting and meeting fundraising benchmarks, starting with forecasting results of philanthropic outreach and donor impact; Managing budgets for appeals and other fundraising initiatives

Cultural Competency—Emphasis on cultural competency in fundraising as well as membership growth and engagement from diverse communities

Innovation in Membership Programs—Ideas for modernizing and growing membership programs; Experience with loyalty programs or innovative membership models

Sustainability and Planned Giving—Ability to envision and create sustainable funding models; Experience in building endowments or long-term financial stability plans; Experience in developing and managing planned giving programs; Understanding of estate planning and tax implications for donors

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Ability to serve, with the support of the Chief Advancement Officer, as a trusted partner to the President & CEO and Board of Trustees.

Possess a successful record of envisioning, implementing and managing a bold advancement strategy within a competitive philanthropic environment.

Demonstrated success as a front-line leadership gift solicitor of gifts of $25,000 or more with a proven track record of building and nurturing long-term relationships with high-net-worth individuals, corporations and institutional funders

Proven record of success in identifying prospects from underrepresented communities and diversifying donors.

Substantial experience managing and evaluating staff and working effectively with high-level volunteers to meet ambitious institutional goals.

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be an excellent communicator and listener with strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to cultivate relationships with and build bridges across diverse internal and external constituencies.

Fluency with budgeting and financial reporting with the ability to analyze fundraising data for trends and planning, and to build reports.

Ability to align fundraising initiatives with our educational programs, signature events, historical preservation efforts, and the charter schools we manage.

Belief in the role of museums, history, and culture.

Minimum of ten years in fundraising and development leadership positions within a museum, arts-related organization, philanthropic department or organization, or institution of higher learning.

A background or familiarity with communications, sales and marketing is a plus.

Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree(s) preferred.

The successful candidate will possess an entrepreneurial spirit, an understanding of appropriate innovation in the non-profit sector in terms of attracting and stewarding donors and corporate sponsors. The successful candidate will work creatively with the strategic plan of the Village to achieve development goals. The ability to conceptualize an initiative, connect it with a funder, and see it realized must happen quickly.
