The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.Training Dates:

(4/15/24-5/4/24) (paid mandatory training)Program Dates : (4/15/24-11/1/24)Location (City and State) : Chicago, ILPrimary Responsibilities :SCA will work with the community to assist with community tree planting and maintenance and help train community members in urban forestry stewardship. The Crew will have access to the Arboretum’s tree care networking and training workshops for professional development and career exposure. The Crew will perform tree planting and watering as green storm-water infrastructure and habitat enhancement in their communities. Crew Members will attend SCA training to ensure safe and effective tree canopy conservation, as well as training in basic digital mapping and data collection techniques. They will also engage with the community at volunteer events. Crew Members meet at a centralized pick-up and drop-off location and are transported to their work site each day by the Crew Leader.Specifically, the Crew Leader will:Act as a

Crew Supervisor

by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamicsServe as an

Advisor

by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardshipAct as a

Project Manager

by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA. Project leaders also coordinate professional development and environmental education opportunities throughout the seasonPerform tasks as a

Program Administrator

by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staffLeader Qualifications :Experience working with youth or young adults, teaching, or environmental education a plusExperience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred – i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardeningAbility to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or moreExperience driving with trailersMust be able to attend Crew Leader training: 4/15/24-5/4/24Must be a minimum of 21 years of ageMust have the ability to work in the US legallyMust have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standardsCPR certification & Wilderness First Aid or approved 16-hour First Aid course equivalent required.
