Summary of Job Duties:
The Planning & Development Director for the Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) serves at the pleasure of the Barberton Planning Commission. The Director will lead in carrying out the vision of the City and help steward appropriate development by implementing the Barberton Comprehensive Plan, the Active Transportation Plan & Complete Streets Policy, Historic Design Guidelines, the Housing & Urban Development (HUD) Consolidated Plan, and the distribution of Community Development Block Grant funds (CDBG). The Director will help implement the Lake Anna Planning Study and related Downtown development projects. The Director will also coordinate the City’s zoning code update by working with consultants to review and provide recommendations to modernize the city’s Development Code (zoning). The Director will take the lead in the review of all zoning-related matters and present on necessary matters before the Planning Commission.
Although not inclusive, the Director will be responsible for attending Planning Commission meetings, City Council, Main Street Barberton Board meetings, Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS) policy meetings, and the Northeast Ohio Four County Regional Planning and Development Organization (NEFCO) board meetings when necessary. The Planning Director shall also attend evening meetings when required.
The ideal candidate will have a collaborative work style, a demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the City, and possess passion and vision for the growth of the City. The Director will have strong communication and planning skills and must be able to create and maintain relationships with residents, business owners, non-profits, grant funders, school board/administration, and City administration/council/board members.
Qualifications:
The candidate should hold a bachelor’s degree in planning or a related field, as recognized by the American Planning Association (APA). The ideal candidate would have at least five years of related work experience, with progressive duties and responsibilities. An applicant possessing an American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certificate is highly desired.
