Medical Laboratory AssistantFLSA Status: Non-ExemptAbout usPhysicians East, P.A.is a team of skilled healthcare professionals united to meet the challenge of delivering quality, cost-efficient, comprehensive healthcare to the people of Eastern North Carolina.About the roleWe are looking for an employee with a knowledge or specimen collection and processing. A knowledge of laboratory testing and procedures is required. This candidate will be responsible for appropriately processing and delivering samples to all laboratory departments in a timely manner. This candidate will assist with answering phones and will process add on lab test orders. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required. Strong computer skills are also required.Supervision Received: Reports to Director of Operations, Laboratory Manager, and Phlebotomy SupervisorSupervision Exercised: NoneTypical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent walking, sitting, bending, and standing required for extended periods of time. Lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.Typical Working Conditions: Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.Responsibilities(This list may not include all the duties assigned.)Performs/assists in initial processing, in an accurate and timely manner, of patient specimens for diagnostic testing by following established protocols for specific laboratory divisions.May provide specimen collection information and/or patient test results in response to inquiries from patient care areas.Processes incoming specimens in lab within 15 minutes of arrival with delivery to performing department within 30 minutes.Orders, processes, and packages (send out) specimens to all reference labs.Perform venipunctures, arterial punctures, and direct patients on collection of urine, stool, and other samples.Complies with OSHA and regulatory requirements by following established procedures to maintain a safe laboratory environment and to meet accreditation standards.Works efficiently as a team member within the department and with other units to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, collaboration, and critical thinking.Maintains flexibility required to adapt to laboratory needs as related to testing and scheduling.Processes add on lab orders sent to the Arlington Lab desktop in the EMR.Assists with answering phone calls.Trains new employees in their areaMaintains CPR certification.This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee. He or she will be required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other duties requested by his or her supervisor.Location & commitmentsFT/PT/Temp/PRN role at any of Physicians East Locations: Greenville, Winterville, Farmville, Kinston, Beulaville.Monday-Friday with hours that will vary between 7:30 am and 5:30pm.Overtime may be required to ensure patients are taken care of, tasks are completed, and calls are returned in a timely manner.Weekend work is rare but can occasionally be necessary.Candidate requirementsHigh school diploma or equivalent required. Strong computer and interpersonal skills needed. Knowledge of laboratory testing and procedures required.
