The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $30.56 to $31.50/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. Learn more about the benefits of working at UC.Brief Summary of Job Duties:Under the direction of the Production Manager, the Costume Shop Manager oversees all costumes, make-up, hair, millinery, and costume crafts for the department's 8-9 yearly main stage productions including both theater and dance. Work includes extensive collaboration and consultation with faculty and guest costume designers to ensure designs are successfully translated, realized, and executed as fully as possible. Creates, oversees, and manages build and labor schedules for each production. Coordinates the scheduling of all fittings. Purchases general shop and show specific materials and supplies. Manages budgets for general shop area, labor, and individual productions. Hires and supervises career, limited, and student employees. Recruits and coordinates the scheduling, training, and supervision of student production wardrobe crews for main stage shows. Evaluates these student crews for grading purposes. Assists in the area of costume construction and alteration as time permits including sewing, cutting, draping, dyeing, millinery, and costume crafts. In addition to main stage related duties, helps to facilitate support for the costume needs of multiple classroom-related productions, as resources allow. Oversees costume rentals and costume shop facilities. Teaches costume practicum labs and evaluates their work for grading purposes. May oversee student design assistants assigned to productions, in coordination with faculty designer. Maintains costume area equipment and inventory. Responsible for use of safe practices in the costume areas.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.Minimum of 1 year of managing staff, schedules and budget.Minimum of 4 years of professional work in theatrical/performing arts environment.Minimum of 4 years in wardrobe, costuming, or styling within live events, theater, or entertainment industries.Knowledge of managing staff, and functioning in a leadership role.Strong time-management and organizational skills.Ability to meet tight deadlines.Proficiency in hand and machine sewing techniques.Strong organizational skills to maintain an efficient wardrobe area.Critical attention to detail, ensuring high-quality costume preparation and maintenance.Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.Preferred Qualifications :Solid knowledge of project management.Ability to work independently or with a team.Ability to work effectively while under pressure.Strong problem recognition / avoidance / resolution skills.Special Conditions of Employment:Schedule frequently includes weeknights and weekends.Satisfactory conviction history background check.UCSB is a Tobacco-Free environment.Job Functions and Percentages of Time:40% Main Stage Productions - Oversees and manages costumes, make-up, hair, millinery, and costume crafts, for 8-9 main stage productions and multiple second stage productions, including both theater and dance. Includes budgeting, coordination, planning, safety, and execution of all costume related items and upkeep, preparation, and scheduling of all costume related rooms and spaces. Work includes extensive collaboration and consultation with costume designers to ensure designs are successfully translated and realized. Attends weekly production and staff meetings. Leads weekly costume shop meetings. Oversees the scheduling of all fittings. Hires or assigns, and supervises, a Wardrobe Supervisor for each production. Assists in the area of costume construction and alterations as time permits including sewing, cutting, draping, dyeing, millinery work, and costume crafts.20% Student Teaching - Recruits and coordinates the scheduling, training, and supervision of Student Wardrobe Crews for all main stage productions (3-6 students per production). Evaluates crew work for grading purposes. Instructs and supervises costume practicum labs and evaluates their work for grading purposes. Instruction includes the preparation of a course syllabus and basic fundamental information relating to the practical and safe implementation of theatrical costume construction. In coordination with a designer or design faculty, may oversee student design assistants. Responsible as the dedicated supervisor of students working practical lab hours in the costume lab and in all spaces, ensuring students are following necessary safety guidelines at all times.15% Supervision / Communication - Supervises the Sr. Wardrobe Technician. Hires, trains, and supervises limited, and student employees, who are assigned to these areas. Serves as communication link to shop employees when designer is not present to ensure proper execution of each design. In consultation with designers, creates overall production build schedule as well as daily work schedule for productions and effectively communicates these. Manages workflow for career, limited, and student hires as it pertains to the costume shop.10% Budgeting / Ordering / Purchasing - In consultation with the Production Manager, creates a budget and is responsible for managing and working within allocated production budgets. In conjunction with designers, responsible for providing accurate estimates and feedback on proposed designs, and working with designers to reach final design choices that can be attained within budget. Responsible for weekly updates on production budgets. Manages general shop budgets for equipment, supplies, maintenance, and labor. Responsible for the ordering of online purchases for all main stage shows. Responsible for the purchasing of general supplies for the costume shop.10% Safety / Maintenance / Facilities / Other - Responsible for the compliance of safe work practices in all work within the costume area. Responsible for the maintenance of correct documentation for all hazardous materials. Responsible for the organization and maintenance of all equipment, supplies, work space, and inventory. Responsible for the coordination of facilities maintenance with departmental and facilities personnel. Works in collaboration with Technical Director and area supervisors and assists as needed and as resources allow. Other duties as assigned.5% Loans / Rentals - Coordinates the loan/check-out of costume items to faculty and students for departmental classroom related needs as time permits. Coordinates costume rentals for non-departmental requests as time permits.
