Paralegal Specialists

to support a potential Federal client in Washington, DC. The positions are full-time and long-term in nature.General Duties:Examines, prepares, and processes a variety of technical legal documents that are characteristically voluminous and complex in format.Dockets new appeals in the electronic case filing system DABACTS and/or e-Filing system.Conducts initial screening of Medicare appeals within seven (7) working days of assignment.Prepares and ships boxes of closed cases to CMS contractors and/or paper files to be digitized to Quality Associate Incorporated (QAI).Requests authorization to email decisions: contacting parties to request consent to email Council decisions while the Departmental Appeals Board is in telework status in response to COVID-19.Contacts HHS contractors to obtain Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) claim files and/or retrieves electronic ALJ files from HHS secure server, downloading Medicare Appeals File; converting AAJ final action documents into PDF format utilizing Adobe Pro and uploading to DABACTS and/or e-Filing system; and performs other paralegal duties as assigned from the COR.Reviews incoming material and independently determines the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas.Obtains needed information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources, and submits completed legal documents to the appropriate AUSA or, in limited cases, directly to the court.In preparation of documents, considers the nature and the status of the case involved.With limited instructions from the AUSA, prepares such legal actions as indictments, criminal complaints, search warrants, judgments, applications, notices, affidavits, summonses, grand jury subpoenas, rules to show cause, proofs of claim, and satisfaction of judgment.Completes variable aspects of preparing recurring legal documents that conform to the rules governing their style and format.Provides assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as independently compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists. Coordinates with the victim/witness specialist to ensure adherence to current Departmental guidelines relating to victims' rights and services responsibilities.Scans/inputs and links case-related materials into an electronic database and manages that database.Manages discovery and trial preparation.Provides a variety of ancillary office support functions requiring some subject-matter knowledge of the assigned unit's programs and operations. Typical assignments may include assembling the physical files for new immigration cases by filing materials in chronological order, preparing and printing conflict of interest sheets for assigned attorney, and numbering the initial discovery.Answers telephone and refers callers to staff members or takes messages as appropriate.Furnishes requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, functions, and general procedures of the office.Determines which matters should be referred to the AUSA and the urgency of the matter.Arranges travel by preparing itinerary, and securing transportation and hotel reservations. Prepares travel authorizations and vouchers.Produces a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications. For example, assignments may include integrating output from different software types, e.g., tables produced by database applications and charts and graphs produced by electronic spreadsheet applications, into word processing or desktop publishing text. Products include complicated tables, graphs, and charts which may be incorporated into legal documents or courtroom presentations. Ensures all documents contain the proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.Provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations.Utilizes various software applications and graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters. Prepares documents, charts, and visual materials used in trials. Provides technical support e.g., enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits.Desired Qualifications:Shall have a master’s or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or a LL.B. or J.D.At least one (1) year of specialized experience conducting independent legal research; preparing and reviewing legal documents/briefings and other memoranda; analyzing legal documents; and utilizing a wide variety of forums to conduct the research of various laws.Must be able to pass a federal background check.About Cameo:Cameo provides a competitive benefit package to its employees that is replete with training programs and continuous education features that few others even attempt to duplicate.
