Legislative Director

The Senate Republican Office (SRO) is seeking an experienced political strategist to assist in the development of legislation and other policy initiatives. The SRO Legislative Director will serve the office by providing in-depth research and analysis on proposed legislation, collaboration with legislators and stakeholders, and trusted leadership for the Caucus Leader and members.

The successful candidate will be well-versed in Oregon’s legislative process and familiar with the policy initiatives of the SRO. Additionally, we seek an individual familiar with the Ways and Means process and one who is confident navigating complex Excel spreadsheets. This position will require the successful candidate to be adept at disseminating complex financial information into a readable format so our members can make the most trusted decisions for Oregonians.

The SRO is a collaborative team of political professionals who work together to foster creativity and innovation. SRO staff are regularly provided opportunities to develop their professional skills, creating opportunities for career advancement.

The SRO staff currently have the flexibility to work according to a hybrid in-person and remote work schedule during the periods between legislative sessions and interim committee meetings. During legislative sessions and periods when interim committees meet, staff work solely onsite in the State Capitol building to carry out the duties of their positions.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED WORK EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS IN:

Knowledge of:

Legislative and budgetary processes, Oregon state laws, legislative history, and political contexts

Chamber and committee rules and operations

Masons Manual of Legislative Procedures

Skill in:

Communicating with, negotiating with, and persuading others, both orally and in writing

Analytical reasoning

Researching policies and legislation and synthesizing complex ideas into a clear work product

Ability to:

Work on multiple issues in a fast-paced, high-stress environment

Pay close attention to detail

Manage time and prioritize work

Work in a collaborative environment and negotiate with diverse groups of people

Organize and facilitate workgroups, events, and meetings

Write policy briefs and anticipate questions about legislation

Tactfully navigate interactions with difficult individuals

Find a balance among the position of various members

HOW TO QUALIFY:

Your application must demonstrate:

A Bachelor’s degree and successful completion of at least one (1) long odd-year regular legislative session and one (1) short even-year regular session in an Oregon State legislative caucus or presiding officer office.

*An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate ability to perform the duties of the position may be considered.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

Over the next two years, the Capitol Building is undergoing extensive renovation and construction projects which may limit accessibility to employees. This will require Legislative employees to work both from home and within the building as the construction project dictates.

The salary in this job posting reflects the base salary without contributions to the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS).
