The Modeling and Analysis Innovation Center within MITRE Labs drives innovative solutions for national security sector, public sector, and other mission partners. The successful candidate is a proven innovative and entrepreneurial technical leader who has demonstrated technical expertise in modeling, simulation, experimentation, and data analytics. Strategic leadership, creativity, and the flexibility to work across evolving and diverse problem sets are a must.

The Director of Modeling and Analysis Innovation Center (MAIC) will be responsible for cohering and leading this organization in creating innovative and disruptive solutions in the public interest, while cultivating world-class technical capabilities and workforce in advanced analysis, modeling, simulation, experimentation, data, and related analytical approaches. The director is responsible for a range of technical, business, and talent development activities. Technical capabilities and expertise include operations research, data analysis, data engineering and environments, system architecture analysis, modeling, simulation, experimentation ranging from table tops to full human in the loop simulations, a range of deep data and modeling analytics and associated technologies. These technical capabilities are applied across the entire range of existing MITRE sponsors and should create opportunities to address broader national challenges through capability and platform development. The Innovation Center translates and integrates lessons learned across multiple application domains and sponsors to continually learn and advance MITRE’s impact. The division encompasses approximately 300 employees in McLean, Virginia; Bedford, Massachusetts; and several other sites across the United States that support a diverse work program across multiple sponsors.

Additionally, the Technical Director will have a role in shaping corporate strategy for internal investments in modeling and simulation including internal research, capability development, and enterprise infrastructure to ensure MITRE is best positioned to deliver on its public service mission to its sponsors.

Local and overnight travel to geographically dispersed sponsor and MITRE locations will be required.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Leading the direction of the Modeling & Analytics Innovation Center, creating a unified vision and strategy for the organization, and shaping the processes and capabilities required to best support the organization.

Proactively identifying the major national challenges and technology opportunities appropriate for modeling, simulation, experimentation & analytics enabled solutions.

Defining, maturing, and evolving the research, technical capabilities, and platforms, and applying those to solve national challenge problems.

Workforce development and building an integrated team including recruiting and training world class talent to enable a growing work program.

Fostering an environment of technical excellence, research currency, and impact.

Partnering with leaders across MITRE’s business units to support strategic planning, work program shaping, and workforce planning.

Management of division operations and serving as direct supervisor to department heads and division staff.

Building dynamic partnerships with industry and academia to advance the center’s capabilities, technical stature, and brand.

Required Skills:

Requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 10 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

Experience leading and building geographically dispersed organizations with a highly technical work program and significant number of employees.

5+ years of hands on and management experience in modeling, simulation, experimentation, analytics, or related areas.

Demonstrated leadership and national and/or international credibility in operations research, data analysis, data engineering and environments, system architecture analysis, modeling, simulation, and human in the loop experimentation.

Demonstrated technical depth as shown by external technical stature, with a published record of research, development, scientific, and/or engineering program impact.

Excellent leadership skills including persistent, tactful, and persuasive communications, influencing, conflict resolution, and building trust.

Demonstrated ability to leverage technical expertise to build and shape a portfolio of sponsor-funded programs through collaborative and effective organizational partnership.

History of team building, achieving team goals, and growing trust.

This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Top Secret level clearance.

Desired Skills:

MS or PhD and 20+ years of related experience.

Familiarity with national security and public sector problem sets.

Demonstrated expertise working with senior government leaders, as well as diverse commercial organizations from small start-ups to large established corporations.

History of success developing new pilots, programs, and mission applications, including navigating both MITRE internal processes and government programmatic processes.

Maturity and expertise balancing performance and mission impact against effective risk management and technical quality.

Demonstrated comfort with significant ambiguity and change in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to prioritize across multiple competing demands and simultaneously handle diverse commitments to multiple stakeholders.

TS/SCI Clearance.
