Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks a Staff Counselor to serve as a clinical staff member within Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). This role provides psychological and counseling services of a preventative and developmental nature to a diverse population of students in individual and group formats.

Under direction of the Director and senior level staff, the Staff Counselor serves as a clinical staff member of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). In consultation with the Director or senior level staff, they are responsible for crisis intervention, serving in an on-call rotation. They may provide consultation to parents, administrators, faculty, and staff, and participate in the creation and delivery of outreach programming to students, student groups, administrators, faculty, and staff. In addition, they may collaborate on college initiatives and participate on college committees.

CAPS provides a range of mental health services to support the unique needs of art and design students, which include objective and non-judgmental counseling, individual and group therapy, 24/7 crisis referral services, as well as tools and resources to build campus-wide awareness/understanding of mental health issues. Essential Functions

Provides counseling services in the form of initial assessments; crisis appointments; and individual and group therapy to students.Using RISD’s EMR system, prepares documentation of services provided. Ensures record-keeping and clinical services are in regulatory and ethical compliance and meet accreditation standards.Participates in case conferences, psychiatric case conferences, and staff meetings in Counseling Services.Serves as part of the daytime and after-hours/weekend on-call rotation for crisis intervention.Depending on Staff Counselor level, the successful candidate may also:

Designs and delivers a wide variety of training, shares best practices, and provides clinical supervision to Counseling Services’ trainees as assigned.Provides consultation and outreach services to the RISD community.College committee service and other duties.Leads and completes special CAPS projects as assigned.Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience

Demonstrated ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds and a commitment to social justice.Demonstrated competency providing clinical services for diverse clients, including international populations and clients along the gender and sexual orientation spectra.Demonstrated experience providing clinical services for a wide range of presenting issues seen in college students, including assessing and managing risk and the treatment of serious concerns with direct support and guidance from senior staff.Demonstrated ability to actively engage in clinical practice with students in ongoing counseling (with individuals and groups) and in outreach programs.Ability to manage a full caseload within a time-limited clinical setting.Experience in the use of electronic/medical records systems; must be computer literate.Basic knowledge of college student development theories and practice.Ability and commitment to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.Requires minimum of 1 to 8 years of relevant counseling experience required and/or limited experience in a complex or crisis environment. RISD has three levels of Staff Counselor and level placement will be determined by years of relevant counseling and complexity of experience, in accordance with job description(s).Master’s or doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in counseling, psychology, social work, mental health, or a related field required. Licensed or license eligible in the State of Rhode Island (must be able to file for license within 3 months of hire).Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a college or university counseling center working with international students.Training or experience with issues impacting international students.Prior experience working with developing artists and designers in an artistic environment is a plus.Union:
