Position Focus:

This role will serve as the Leader of Yale's Center for Research Computing (YCRC) and will report jointly to the Vice Provost for Research and the Vice President for Information Technology and Campus Services. This position provides strategic vision for and serves as the head of research computing technology support for Yale University. This role will lead Yale Center for Research Computing and works in close collaboration with central IT and distributed IT leaders, research cores, centers, and institutes to operate and develop new and emerging computing technologies for faculty and research groups across all university academic units.

Essential Duties

Lead the development and implementation of research computing and IT strategies, policies, and procedures in alignment with the organization’s goals and objectives.

Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to staff. Cultivate and foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Collaborate with the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to establish and maintain robust security measures and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

Establish and maintain governance processes, policies, and standards to ensure internal and external regulations compliance.

Responsible for effective workforce planning. Ensures the organization has the right people with the right skills to meet the business objectives.

Ensure the organization’s systems are secure, reliable, efficient, and following regulations and standards.

Responsible for developing, implementing, and stewardship of the capital and operations budget.

Remain current on emerging technologies and trends; evaluate their potential impact on the organization.

Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical University senior leadership stakeholders and be able to make sound decisions that align with the overall technology strategies and plans.

Manage relationships with third-party vendors and service providers, ensuring the organization always moves forward and improves.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 12 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Eight years of experience at the managerial level.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proven ability to develop and execute short and long-term plans for computing initiatives and services consistent with the university’s overall goals. Strong understanding of the latest technologies and trends in research computing.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate with IT professionals, other leadership, students, faculty, and other stakeholders.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Well-developed fiscal management skills. Solid understanding of budget development and implementation, financial planning, and management to ensure projects and service are within budget.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proven ability to manage change within the organization to include implementing new processes, procedures, and technologies.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Well-developed risk management skills. Proven ability to identify and manage risks related to IT services.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Ph.D. in a science or social science discipline with a strong computational methods and data management background. 10-15 years of demonstrated experience in research computing technology support, preferably in a university context. Knowledge of emerging trends in research computing technologies.
