Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties involved in receiving, evaluating, prioritizing, and relaying 911, emergency, and non-emergency calls for service; operates a variety of telecommunications equipment, including telephone/text, mapping, and computer-aided dispatch systems. The Public Safety Call Taker is the entry-level classification of the Dispatcher series. The Public Safety Call Taker is distinguished from Dispatcher which is required to dispatch units and coordinate the responses of emergency personnel. Candidates with prior experience, including heavy public contact as a telephone operator, receptionist, police cadet, or related position, are highly desirable.

Candidates must be available to work assigned and rotating shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays. The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills/abilities, experience, and characteristics:

Knowledge & EducationGraduation from high school, or G.E.D. equivalent.Knowledge of basic dispatch codes, as well as standard abbreviations and industry terminology commonly used by emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies.Knowledge of telecommunications systems, which may include transmission, broadcasting, and switching systems, and computerized databases, including teletype operations and procedures.Candidates must have knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures, including safety procedures, such as CPR and first aid. Policies and procedures may refer to department policies and procedures related to emergency communications and disaster and special response plans.Skills/AbilitiesAbility to type 40 net wpm quickly and accurately on a computer keyboard; write quickly and legibly. To be considered for this position you MUST attach a valid 5-minute typing certificate of at least 40 Net WPM (test must be taken within 1 year from application date). Online testing agencies are accepted.Understand pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without immediate supervision.Ability to properly assess calls to determine whether they are of an emergency or non-emergency nature.The ability to actively listen and communicate effectively, clearly, and distinctly through clear speech and hearing.Be able to work under stressful situations and remain calm in crises and high stress situations.Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with fellow employees, representatives from other departments, and supervisors.Solicit required critical information from callers, and route the call as quickly as possible.Operate the computer aided dispatch system equipment, Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) and other office equipment; operate teletype and computer terminal to check for registered owner of vehicles and other information.ExperienceOne year (1) of work experience involving considerable public contact work.Prior experience that includes heavy public contact as a telephone operator and/or dispatching, receptionist, police cadet, or related position, is highly desired.POST certification should be obtained within the first year from date of hire.A typing certification of at least 40 WPM from any agency (in-person or online) is accepted and

must

be attached to your application.The incumbent may be sent to attend P.O.S.T.'s Public Safety Dispatcher Course.

Video Interview

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications AND attach a current and valid typing certificate that meets the criteria listed above will be invited to participate in a video interview. Pass/FailAudio Exercise/Written Examination

Audio Exercise -Candidates will listen to an audio recording of an example of the type of calls Public Safety Dispatchers are required to handle. A short break will be given after the audio recording and then the written examination will be administered.

Written Examination - Applicants must receive a minimum score of 70% in order to continue on in the recruitment process.Pass/Fail

Oral Interview

Candidates will be placed on the eligibility list based on the scores received on each of the examination components. 100%

Background Investigation

The candidate selected for the position will undergo a thorough background investigation including a polygraph examination. Once a conditional job offer has been made, the candidate will undergo comprehensive medical and psychological examinations, including a urine drug screen, by City Medical Examiners. The day will start with the audio exercise and written exam. Those who score a 70% or higher on the written exam will continue onto interviews. Candidates that pass the interview will be placed on an eligibility list and will be contacted by the department to start the background process as vacancies arise.

The OrganizationThe City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government.
