Chief Financial Officer

supervises the financial and administrative operations of Federation, stewarding an annual operating budget exceeding $8MM and facilitating annual grantmaking of approximately $5MM. Areas of responsibility include finance, investment, internal and external audit, accounting, payroll, insurance, employee benefits, information technology, and facilities management.The CFO is a member of the senior staff and takes the leadership role in financial-condition analysis, budget management, and financial reporting, ensuring the financial strength and accountability of the organization, so that the organization meets the highest standards of financial management and oversight. The CFO plays a critical role in making sure that donor funds are stewarded well to make the most impact possible.The CFO reports and is a partner to the President & Chief Executive Officer. The CFO provides staff support, and is the primary liaison with members of our Board of Directors and relevant committees, including the Treasurer, Finance Committee, Audit Committee, Investment Committee, and UJF Holdings Corp., a separate but associated entity that owns the Joseph and Lenka Finci Jewish Community Building. The CFO attends board meetings and board committee meetings as appropriate. The CFO is a member of the Senior Leadership Team.ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPlan, execute, and evaluate the Federation’s fiscal functions and performance, including annual audit, tax returns, management reports, financial reports, and year-end financial statements.Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff in Finance/Accounting to promote growth of a skilled and motivated staff. Currently, the CFO directly manages the Controller and the Donation Coordinator, as well as our outsourced accounting/payroll service team.Manage the operations of Finance and Accounting, including instituting proper financial controls and data security while continually improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the department.Develop, implement, and enforce policies, procedures, and systems to improve the overall operation and effectiveness of our financial management.Assure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.Provide timely and accurate reports and analysis of budgets, monthly financials, and financial trends, assisting Management and the Board to monitor and respond to current operations and the external financial environment.Interpret financial results and suggest recommendations and next steps in line with the Federation’s mission and strategy.Manage banking, investment management, auditor, outside accounting and payroll service, and insurance relationships of the Federation.Oversee operation of the Federation building, working closely with the building management service provider and the tenant.Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO.EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLSAt least five years’ experience in senior financial roles, with three or more years in the philanthropic or non-profit area.Demonstrated proficiency managing budgeting, accounting, and non-profit, public benefit charitable financial organizations.Demonstrated ability to analyze audited financial statements.Expertise in MS Excel, proficiency with accounting software, including use of spreadsheet and database software, and ability to onboard new systems quickly.Ability to communicate financial and other information about the operation of the organization clearly in writing and through PowerPoint and presentations to the Board and to relevant committees.Experience with strategic planning and project management.Demonstrated ability to partner with volunteer leadership, committees, community agencies, and other stakeholders.Demonstrated leadership and strategic planning skills with high ethical standards and appropriate professional image.Strong knowledge of non-profit organizations.Familiarity with Jewish customs, traditions, and community, especially in San Diego preferred but not required.EDUCATIONBachelor’s degree in finance/business/accounting required; MBA strongly preferred.CPA (certified public accountant) or CMA (certified management accountant) preferred but not required.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND EQUIPMENTThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must have the ability to travel, and work weekends and evenings when needed.COMPENSATION AND BENEFITSThis is a full-time position, working onsite in San Diego, CA, with the ability to work from home on most Fridays.Compensation range: $160,000 – $180,000 per year, with a generous benefits plan, retirement plan, and comprehensive paid sick leave, vacation, and 22 paid holidays per year.Jewish Federation of San Diego County is an equal opportunity employer.
