The Business Development Manager position will be responsible for maintaining, and growing, Markel's relationships with our retail strategic partners. Your day-to-day duties will include working with underwriters, brokers, Markel leaders, and other key stake holders to profitably grow Markel's book of business. The primary geography of the position will be the Midwest. There will be some travel in the surrounding states as well. Total travel will at least 50%.
We are seeking a Business Development Manager for Markel's West Region retail team. The best candidate for this position will have a solid understanding of Markel's retail product lines. This position will serve as a primary business development conduit with our strategic retail partners on a regional basis (IL, MI, MO, MN, OH, WI). Your extraordinary marketing and sales proficiency will maximize producer engagement, revenue and profitability by driving customer loyalty. You will coordinate your promotional efforts with Markel Specialty business development, underwriting and marketing teams to build brand awareness of Markel as a world-class insurance company.
Producer Liaison
Build and maintain relationships with Markel Specialty regional retail business development, underwriters, management team and product line leaders.Serve as conduit to facilitate exceptional communications and interaction between and among regional management, underwriters and assigned producers.Coordinate all assigned producer visits with the regional management team, marketing managers and underwriters to ensure a consistent and effective marketing presence.Actively search for opportunities to develop business for existing and new products with assigned brokers.Market Strategist
Create, coordinate, and execute marketing strategies with the regional underwriters, marketing manager, and management team that will focus on achieving underwriting profit and growthProvide consistent and effective communication to management regarding sales and marketing progress, forecasts, and resultsResearch and analyze the needs and trends of the retail marketplace to ensure our relevance within assigned producers.Increase visibility and brand awareness of Markel.Promote cross marketing and renewal retention with assigned producers.Enjoy industry reconnaissance.Qualifications
5+ years of business development/marketing experience working with Markel's retail producersSuperior communication and interpersonal skills requiredFirst hand understanding of team based decision making in an entrepreneurial environment requiredStrong relationship development and negotiation skills requiredUnderstanding of property, casualty, and professional liability underwriting and claimsAbility to work in a fast-paced environment, effectively handle ambiguity, and adapt to changeProven experience to work effectively in a matrixed underwriting environment requiredAbility to travel 50% or more, when appropriateThis role requires employees to drive, and fly, on a regular basis. Employees in this position are expected to maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable DMV Motor Vehicle Record which will be pulled on an annual basis for verification.Who we are:
