Essential Job Functions

Organizes, supervises and evaluates the nursing department.

Develops and conveys the philosophy and objectives of the nursing department.

Participates in the development of, and annual review of, policies, procedures, and job descriptions.

Participates in the recruitment, selection and the retention of qualified and effective staff.

Assists in obtaining required employment records.

Assures orientation programs for nursing staff are conducted.

Develops and maintains nursing staffing patterns in compliance with regulatory guidelines.

Participates in the development and implementation of resident care policies.

Performs employee evaluations.

Monitors employee performance and implements disciplinary action as necessary.

Assures timecards are approved for payroll.

Develops and uses criteria and tools to evaluate the effectiveness of the nursing department.

Meets with all facility consultants pertaining to the departments and initiates follow-up to recommendations.

Maintains open lines of communication with facility Administrator.

Works closely with QA Director and quality program.

Participates in the development and implementation of in-service programs for nursing staff and other departments as indicated.

Supervises and evaluates resident care.

Assesses and evaluates overall health status of prospective and present residents to determine appropriate services or level of care – acuity of care.

Performs assessments of potential residents with Admission Coordinator – determines appropriate placement.

Schedules and performs rounds in all resident areas and visits residents on a daily basis.

Provides consultation to Unit Coordinators and Shift Charge Nurses regarding policies, procedures, resident care and clinical monitoring.

Assists in recommendations regarding physical, emotional, spiritual and rehabilitative needs.

Supervises the organization of resident care conferences.

Communicates with attending physicians or Medical Director as necessary to ensure that resident care needs are met and required visits/documentation are provided.

Reviews incident/accident reports daily – visits target residents.

Reviews 24-hour condition report daily – visits target residents.

Reviews weekly skin reports, infection reports, monthly weights, QA audits, etc.

Monitors restraint usage, application, and reduction on a weekly auditing basis.

Investigates concerns/suggestions as assigned by Administrator – responds within five business days.

Evaluates staff performance, assignments including CNA Assignment Sheets – distribution/revision.

Serves on an on-call rotation with Nursing Admin. Staff.

Available to meet staff and residents needs 24 hours a day.

Knows and enforces state and federal regulations.

Maintains familiarity with changes in the state and federal regulations, which affect resident care and facility operations.

Participates in periodic surveys by Health Facilities Division, State Board of Health.

Implements facility mini surveys to QA nursing services.

Monitors resident medical record documentation for adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.

Audits medical record for cohesiveness in charting and correlation of all documents.

Completes nurse-staffing reports.

Completes and submits required forms and reports in a timely manner and/or as requested.

Plays an active role in the implementation and organization of the antibiotic stewardship program.

Participates in development of annual nursing budget.

Assists in the preparation and administration of the annual budget based on staffing, equipment, supplies, and operational expenses.

Monitors usage of supplies and equipment.

Monitors staffing dollars.

Reviews daily agency cost projection and PPD staffing.

Assists in the development of long-range plans for replacement of major equipment.

Promotes maintenance of maximum resident census and retention of quality personnel.

Promotes constructive working relationships between health care disciplines.

Attends department directors' meetings as scheduled.

Communicates with department directors on an as needed basis to problem solve and plan for resident care.

Works together well with Social Services as resident advocate, admissions and transfers.

Monitors and coordinates contract services in nursing.

Monitors provision of physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy.

Meets with all levels of nursing staff on a periodic basis to exchange information, address issues affecting resident care to promote job satisfaction.

Attends appropriate continuing education programs to enhance skills.

Other Responsibilities

Promotes favorable public relations.

Displays positive/professional image, acting as a spokesperson for the facility.

Reviews and resolves concerns with the Administrator.

Establishes linkage with established community agencies.

Communicates and collaborates with educational institutions, as feasible, to enhance educational and other programs for the benefit of personnel and residents.
