SUMMARY/OBJECTIVEThe Director of Nursing Services (DNS) leads the Center clinical team to fulfill the organization’s mission, vision and values. This position has overall accountability for providing leadership, direction, and administration of day-to-day operations associated with direct patient care activities, nursing practice, and clinical education and development, including continuous improvement of nursing services and staff to meet patients/residents and their families’ needs and expectations. The DNS communicates a shared vision for clinical excellence and ensures the realization of high quality and cost-effective health care services that are consistent with the center’s evidence-based practices and policies, regulatory and other legal requirements, and philosophies. This position is responsible for driving, supporting, and modeling a service-oriented culture focused on top of license practice, interprofessional collaboration, employee engagement, quality, patient safety, service excellence, fiscal responsibility, and the overall patient/resident experience. The DON collaborates with the Executive Director and Center Leadership Team to drive business excellence, including strategic planning, budget preparation, and effective oversight of resource utilization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assumes responsibility of the center in the absence of the Executive Director.

Implements policies/procedures with follow-up and supervision of staff to ensure compliance; works closely with Medical Director, Health Department, C.D.C., etc. to ensure current standard practices are in place; recommends to regional office changes in policies/ procedures as needed.

Assists in preparing budget for the department; administers approved budget.

Directs and delegates management of professional and ancillary nursing care team members.

Coordinates activities of various nursing units/wings promoting and maintaining harmonious relationships among nursing personnel and with medical staff, residents, facility staff and the public; screens clients prior to admission to ensure the center can provide services.

Analyzes and evaluates nursing and related services rendered to improve quality of resident care and plan better utilization of care team member time and activities.

Ensures positive outcomes are accomplished for residents; responsible to develop systems and work schedules that respect resident’s lifestyle and ensure the resident reaches the highest attainable level of functioning; makes rounds at least daily; follows up daily on each shift to ensure changes in status are reported and recorded.

Ensures a Continuous Quality Improvement Program is in place and that appropriate follow-up occurs.

Ensures new care team members are effectively oriented, ensures an ongoing educational program is in place, and promotes professional development of nursing staff.

Develops goals and objectives for the department; motivates and manages team members to accomplish the same.

Ensures medical record documentation and that the care planning process is interdisciplinary, consistent, timely and reflective of resident needs and in compliance with regulations at all times; serves as Chairperson of Care Planning Committee.

Ensures medical services are provided as required by regulation and that the physician component of the medical record is complete.

Determines and regularly monitors Medicare and level of care status to maximize revenue generation; monitors Medicare utilization closely to ensure program guidelines are followed; prepares all medical record documentation necessary to submit with Medicare billing.

Ensures safe working practices are developed and adhered to, and that care team members are knowledgeable in the use of equipment.

Deals with families and residents when issues arise; handles complaints and provides education regarding care, as needed.

Ensures appropriate authority for care is documented, i.e., Living Will, Health Care Surrogate, etc.; maintains close communication with residents and families, facility staff and health care professionals.

Ensures proper infection control techniques are utilized.

Maintains effective communication with residents and families, center staff and health care professionals.

Reviews all care related consultant reports and ensure follow-up on recommendations.

May be required to drive for company business with company or personal vehicle.

EDUCATION/VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Current R.N. License by State Board of Nursing required with demonstrated managerial and administrative ability.

Prefer experience in the long-term care profession or working with geriatric population.

A minimum of 5 years of clinical experience with at least two years supervisory experience.

BSN preferred.

Skills in organizing and planning programs and assigning care team members to provide nursing service for residents.

Ability to evaluate reports, programs, and other data against both judgmental and verifiable criteria.

This position requires that the employee is able to read, write, speak and understand the spoken English language to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our patients and visitors at the work site when responding to their medical and physical needs.

Maintains current BLS/CPR certification (All SNFs and Behavioral Centers; ALFs/ILFs as required by State).
