Job SummaryThe Director of Nursing holds primary accountability for the quality of nursing care and related patient care services. Provides the clinical and administrative leadership and direction for the patient care services and facilitates the development, implementation, and evaluation of these services. Provides leadership using Process Excellence methodologies through collaborations with primary customer groups.

Position Purpose

What You Will Do

Collaborates with leaders of MercyOne Medical Center – New Hampton Board of Trustees, network, management, medical staff, and clinical staff in the hospital-wide decision-making structures and processes including developing, implementing, and reviewing the hospital’s mission, strategic plans, budgets, resource allocations, operating plans, policies, quality assessment and improvement activities and the hospital plan for patient care.

Develops, implements, and periodically reviews department/organization policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services complying with federal and state regulations. Maintains current knowledge base of trends, policies, regulatory standards, and legislation and advises administration when pertinent.

Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to promote the recruitment, retention, development, and continuing education and advancement goals of nursing and patient care providers.

Serves as the local Nurse Executive working closely with MercyOne, Trinity and MercyOne affiliates. Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates care delivery within nursing and related patient care department, including establishing guidelines for the delivery of care to include standards of nursing practice, standards of patient care, nursing policies and procedures and nurse staffing plans.

Defines and maintains the quality standard of nursing practice and care within the hospital and clinics.

Investigates new nursing techniques, practices, equipment and products through educational seminars, continuing education and periodicals.

Routinely attends and actively participates in the MercyOne Nursing Affinity Groups and Patient Care Team; supports and implements sharing of best practices and system wide initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of an approved school of nursing required.

Current licensure or evidence of application for licensure as a professional registered nurse in the State of Iowa.

BS/BSN required or willing to obtain within 5 years.

A minimum of five years clinical nursing practice, two years of experience as a clinical nurse manager, nursing supervisor or similar nursing administration experience is required.

Progressive clinical and administrative experiences which demonstrate success in nursing.

Excellent communication skills, including public speaking skills and written skills.

Employment experience demonstrating a strong work ethic.

Advanced skills in clinical nursing practice and nursing administration.
