680 Lake Shore DriveJob Description:General Summary:Responsible for timely and accurate coding and abstracting of Emergency Room, Outpatient Surgery, Observations, Partial Hospitalizations and Ancillary visits. Codes and abstracts following established coding guidelines and utilizes ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCs, and CPT code sets. This position ensures that revenue cycle, customer service, quality, individual, and team goals are met.Essential Job Functions:Review of outpatient visit documentation for diagnoses, treatments, and services; assign ICD-10, HCPCs, CPT codes, and modifiers as appropriate to Emergency department, Partial Hospitalizations, Outpatient Surgery, and Ancillary Visits.Facilitates correction of incorrect service date, admit diagnoses, charges, and patient class with front end revenue cycle departments.Identification of trends in ADT errors and facilitates education and correction.Prioritizes work to ensure revenue cycle goal achievement of 4 days post discharge and/or below Average Daily Revenue.Maintains quality standards of CMH, AHA, AMA, CMS, OIG and TJC pertaining to coding and reimbursement.Perform daily, weekly, monthly work queue reconciliation; identify old accounts, check for documentation, contact appropriate parties to obtain documentation required for coding and billing.Performs research and/or seeks assistance from Nosology and American Hospital Association on complex coding cases. Documents findings and educates team on coding guidance.Coordinates with Patient Financial Services to reconcile any DNB, IHA errors, denials or claim edits.Queries providers utilizing Epic Physician Query Process in accordance to AHA guidelines when appropriate.Makes recommendations on Epic coding and SVC edits to prevent coding, billing, and claim edits.Trains and orients new employees.Abstracting required data elements for internal and external reporting needs.Stay current in Coding changes by reading, maintaining CEUs, and attending education sessions related to Coding and Health Information Management.Participates in revenue cycle and HIM project workgroups.Performs other duties as assigned by the coding manager and/or the director.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Must possess a minimum of CCS, RHIA, or RHIT credential. Must maintain credential status through obtaining continuing education requirements.Must have completed and continue to demonstrate proficiency in coding program curriculum to include full courses Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Sciences, Pharmacology, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and Healthcare Data Content Structures.Completion of an AHIMA approved RHIT, RHIA, or CCS program.Must pass Lurie Children's Coding Exam with a minimum of 90% score.Minimum of one year prior coding experience required.Must have a working proficiency of Microsoft Office applications and computer skills to effectively navigate an EMR.Must be able to type a minimum of 30 Wpm.Must be able to communicate effectively with all Lurie staff; clinical, clerical, management. Excellent communication skills necessary for interaction at all levels of staff.Must be able to communicate effectively with external contacts: outside vendors as required in the execution of problem solving activities and assisting patients/visitors with their needs.Ability to handle multiple projects. Ability to appropriately prioritize tasks.
