Job Overview:

The Pulmonary Technician performs all aspects of diagnostic pulmonary testing, including patient preparation and education, procedure analysis, equipment maintenance, and trouble-shooting.

Qualifications:

Required:

Graduate of AMA approved school of Respiratory Care.

Current New Jersey Respiratory Care practitioner license.

Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

ACLS & PALS highly recommended in exercise testing.

One year prior pulmonary function testing experience.

Preferred:

NBRC credential of CPFT. RPFT preferred.

Scheduling Requirements:

This is a part-time, day position, 24 hours/week.

Essential Functions:

Perform daily calibration and leak testing on lung function analyzers, log results and perform preventive maintenance as needed.

Evaluate patient prior to testing, gathering pertinent clinical history, recent use of bronchodilator, and lab work to apply to each testing session to facilitate appropriate testing, proper diagnosis and reduce the possibility of retesting due to inadequate assessment.

Demonstrate knowledge and skill in all standard Pulmonary Function Tests, applying the American Thoracic Society, in pediatric and adult patient populations. Knowledge and skill includes device and interface selection, application, operational verification and calibration. Assess test results for quality assurance, accuracy and repeatability of all lung function measurements (Spirometry, Helium Dilution Lung Volumes, Diffusing Capacity, Plethysmography, Six Minute Walk Test, Pulmonary Stress test, etc.)

Patient interaction – assure patient comfort by demonstrating pleasant behavior, explaining the method and purpose of each procedure and answering patient questions related to testing.

Coordinate the scheduling of inpatient testing with scheduled outpatient testing to minimize patient waiting time and excessive downtime (>15 minutes) between patients.

Process reports of pulmonary function testing for physician interpretation the same day that the test is done. Assure that all charges are entered in Epic and completed the same day that tests are done. Place a preliminary copy of inpatient tests on patient chart at the completion of testing.

Comply with all Infection Prevention and Safety policies and procedures. Demonstrate familiarity with relevant TJC, DOHSS, CMS and other regulatory Standards.

Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide Age Appropriate care to the patients served in the Pulmonary Laboratory, including Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric with their relative needs.
