DescriptionThe Professional Development Specialist will work in collaboration with the Director of Professional Development to support the plans, development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing education and professional development. Support the functions of nursing professional development in advancing nursing practice and dimensions of professional development through knowledge and skill acquisition, competency validation, and life-long learning. All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, CNMC Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. CNMC supports the development of RN relationships within the community; specifically those relationships associated with the health and well-being of the community at large.QualificationsMinimum EducationM.S. Nursing or Masters of Education or related field, with baccalaureate degree in nursing (Required)Minimum Work Experience5 years related and progressive acute care and management experience (Required)Required Skills/KnowledgeWill successfully complete the hospital and nursing orientation at CNMC. Accountable for providing services in a manner that is sensitive to diversity. Demonstrates skills consistent with providing CPR Instruction and other clinical programs.Required Licenses and CertificationsRegistered Nurse in District of Columbia (Required). Licensure/certification in specialty required as applicable (Required)Functional AccountabilitiesProfessional PracticeSupport/participate in Shared Leadership.Contribute to CNMC's Magnet Journey.Ensure nursing practice is based on evidence of best practice.Participate in performance improvement activities (division or unit level).Participate in community activities.EducationCollaborate with department manager/director and staff to plan, develop, implement and evaluate educational programs for the CNMC nurse.Design, implement, and maintain systems to document clinical competency and participation in education programs.Manage continuing education programs.Develop plans and present educational programs consistent with the educational needs assessments.Use knowledge base of teaching and learning theories to develop curriculum design, test, and measurement evaluation.FacilitatorFacilitate the ongoing competency assessment for nursing staff related to orientation, in-service education and/or continuing education.Use adult learning principles to contribute to professional development activities.Serve as a role model for other educators and facilitate team building.Serve as faculty/coordinator for centralized nursing orientation and other in-service programs for professional and para-professional nursing staff.LeadershipCollaborate with the Director/Manager for Professional Development and other organizational leaders to promote AHA guidelines across healthcare disciplines.Participate in assigned organizational committees.Design, coordinate, and evaluate interventions which advance CNMC's mission, support the strategic plan, and deliver designated outcomes.Serve as consultant in instructional design and evaluation.Collaborate with hospital committees and shared nursing leadership council to review and revise nursing practice guidelines, policies, and procedures in keeping with current evidence-based practice.Change AgentCollaborate with members of the organizational team to review, revise, and develop appropriate tools to meet CNMC's and other accreditation agency's competency assessment standards.Implement processes to monitor organizational competency assessment.Collaborate with nursing leadership to develop intervention plans based on needs assessment, mission, and strategic plan.Collaborate with the health care community (academic partners, DOH, Board of Nursing) to strengthen professional nursing practice at CNMC.ResearchIn collaboration with the Director/Manager, engage in the research/PI process as principal investigator, collaborator, or evaluator.Evaluate the outcomes of educational endeavors and track learner's outcomes.Responsible to ensure review and revision of clinical practice guidelines, policies, and procedures in keeping with recent research, theory, and innovation.Assess, measure, and report performance using appropriate methodologies and strategies.Organizational AccountabilitiesOrganizational Commitment/IdentificationPartner in the mission and uphold the core principles of the organization.Committed to diversity and recognizes the value of cultural ethnic differences.Demonstrate personal and professional integrity.Maintain confidentiality at all times.Customer ServiceAnticipate and respond to customer needs; follow up until needs are met.Teamwork/CommunicationDemonstrate collaborative and respectful behavior.Partner with all team members to achieve goals.Receptive to others' ideas and opinions.Performance Improvement/Problem-solvingContribute to a positive work environment.Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to change.Identify opportunities to improve clinical and administrative processes.Make appropriate decisions, using sound judgment.Cost Management/Financial ResponsibilityUse resources efficiently.Search for less costly ways of doing things.Safety
