PRIMARY PURPOSE

The RN is a licensed professional who uses the Parkland nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery, that focuses on a particular patient population(s)/specific health conditions, by the health care team.

Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response.

The RN utilizes knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients to transition through the healthcare encounter without any preventable complications or delays.

The RN delegates interventions to health care personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition and the competencies of the employee.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONSEducation

Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing.

Must have completed Basic Electronic Fetal Monitoring training from AWHONN within 90 days of hire or reclassification into the role. Advanced level is recommended.

Current incumbents in the role as of 07/01/2023, must obtain Basic level no later than 01/01/2024.

Experience

Must have two years of nursing experience. Prefer experience in an acute care setting.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

Must have current RN license or valid temporary permit with the Texas Board of Nursing or valid Compact RN license.

Must have current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from one of the following: American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Military Training Network.

Must have current Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification upon hire or placement in the role. Current incumbents and those hired between February 1st - February 29th, 2024 will have 90 days from date of hire to attain the certification.

Must have current NRP certification upon hire or placement in role.

Must have one of the following, upon hire or transition into the role: AWHONN Intermediate Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certificate, AWHONN Advanced Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certificate, NCC Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification.

Must retake every two years from completion date of previous certificate: AWHONN Intermediate Electronic Fetal Monitoring or AWHONN Advanced Electronic Fetal Monitoring.

National Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification must be renewed every three years.

Responsibilities

Serves as a patient advocate, focusing on patient needs, rights, confidentiality, and cultural preferences. Maintains positive working relationships with all Parkland internal and external customers. Provides patient care educational information and training to patients and family members.

Maintains and implements knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact nursing practice, ensuring compliance.

Performs appropriate patient assessments including continuous surveillance, recognizing changes in a patient's condition and providing appropriate interventions.

Performs appropriate duties during the laboring process, including safe medication administration and emergency resuscitation care.

Completes appropriate documentation, maintaining accurate and timely entries in patient care records.

Works with other staff in providing direction to non-nursing staff and participates in information exchanges that support departmental goals.

Serves as a preceptor or trainer to newer nursing staff members.

Identifies ways to improve work processes and patient satisfaction, making recommendations to supervisors.

Stays abreast of the latest developments in nursing practice by attending seminars/workshops and participating in professional organizations.

Any duties deemed competent.
