The office’s precedent-setting work has included foremost protecting renters’ rights, quality of life issues, consumer protection, environmental protection, land use, liability defense, and misdemeanor prosecution.The Consumer Protection UnitThe Consumer Protection Unit engages in affirmative litigation and community education to enforce and promote consumer protection, including renters’ rights and code enforcement. With five lawyers, two investigators, and support staff, the Unit works to protect public rights in a variety of areas, including tenant protection, fair housing, consumer protection, environmental protection, and nuisance abatement.Chief Deputy City Attorney, Consumer Protection UnitThe City Attorney is seeking candidates who:Have a proven record of successfully handling and/or supervising complex litigation.Will aggressively pursue the protection of rights of residential tenants, consumers, and the City.Will manage the Unit to set goals, train, supervise, motivate, and hold employees accountable to efficiently obtain the best results for the community.Have the ability to communicate effectively with vulnerable populations.Have the ability to collaborate with other Units of the City Attorney’s Office and community partners.Required qualifications:Minimum of five years of experience leading and coordinating the work of others.Demonstrated commitment to the public good.Sound judgment and high ethical standards.Exceptional communication and legal advocacy skills.Minimum of five years of legal experience.Licensed to practice law in the State of California and in good standing with the State Bar.Preferred qualifications:Commitment to public service and passionate desire to improve quality of life for local residents.Demonstrated success in leadership and management roles.Record of creative and impactful litigation for the public good.Trial and appellate litigation experience in civil and criminal cases in state and federal court.Creativity and ability to develop innovative solutions to complex policy problems.Proven ability to communicate effectively with vulnerable populations.Substantial experience in tenant protection, fair housing, consumer protection, code enforcement, and/or environmental justice work.Speaking a second language, especially Spanish, is a plus.Demonstrated ability to use technology and data as tools for legal advocacy and leadership.Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and the names of three references (will not be contacted prior to interview).
