The Staff RN uses the nursing process to deliver nursing care to a given patient care population as it relates to the care setting. Nursing care is based on the interpretation and execution of the medical and nursing plan of treatment utilizing established procedures, standards, and protocols of individuals within the assigned work shift. The Staff RN provides nursing care to the population served in the unit.

Recognizes and manages vasovagal response to treatment.
Assesses and differentiates types of chest and abdominal pain with appropriate intervention.
Ensures diet is appropriate and restrictions (food and fluid) are followed.
Provides activity/rest as appropriate to patient condition, disease process.
Ensures a safe environment for staff and patients.
Discharge planning: early assessment of need for home durable equipment, follow-up with home health or possible rehab or ECF.
Keeps patients clean and turned appropriately.
Ensures durable equipment is provided to the patient to promote independent functioning.
Manages hematomas in A-line puncture sites.
Correlates disease process to drug therapies to manage patients with hyper/hypotension, fluid overload, pump failure, dysrhythmias.
Interprets EKG tracings as they relate to drug therapies and disease process and intervenes.
Maintains IV access on all patients.
Reinforces follow-up care with physicians, e.g., blood drug levels, M.D. appointments.
Implements protocols requiring higher level expertise: e.g., ACLS code management.
Works with MD to provide for Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy, Dietary and/or Respiratory Therapy when needed.
Provides assistance with complex discharge planning in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team to develop a safe, realistic, and timely discharge plan.
