This is a locum consultant post. We are seeking a colleague with Paediatric ED expertise to work in our Paediatric ED as well as in the main ED Consultant rota. The remit of the post holder will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients attending the Emergency Department in the Denmark Hill site. The individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.Main duties of the job

The post will be based at Denmark Hill and the proposed 10 PA Job Plan is attached. This will be reviewed within 3 months of the post holder commencing in post.The out of hours commitment is 1:9 for the ED rota made up of late shifts and weekends, including 1:23 on call. The on call component is classed as Category A. There is a commitment to undertake routine job planned work on Saturdays or Sundays as part of the total job planned PAs.There are no specific leadership roles associated with these roles but the overall managerial portfolio of the team is regularly reviewed and the successful applicants can expect to be invited to apply for roles as part of the consultant team.Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Together with other colleagues, to provide a service for patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.Provide clinical supervision of junior medical practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group’s management team.Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group’s Business Plan.Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty.Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced.Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies.Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.Person specification

Qualifications

FRCEM or equivalentSub specialty accreditation in paediatric emergency careOther higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD).Registration

Within six months of the expected date of CCT (or equivalent) on the day of interviewFull registration with GMC and Name on Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment.Training & Experience

Wide experience in all aspects of Emergency Medicine, culminating in award of Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC.Current provider or instructor status in ALS, ATLS/ETLS, APLS/PALS.Significant paediatric emergency care experienceExperience in child safeguarding work within the paediatric EDAdministration

Experience in day to day organisation of Emergency Medicine services in a busy Teaching HospitalFamiliar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.Familiarity with information technology and general computer skillsManagement and Leadership

Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teamsManagement course and/or qualification.Audit & quality improvement

Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement.Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Emergency Medicine.Research

Experience of clinical research.Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.Teaching
