A Brief OverviewPerforms routine and special technical procedures for blood bank as directed or required for effective operation of the laboratory. Works effectively with others to coordinate and implement activities.

What you will do

Assists in coordinating the daily operations and activities of the department according to established policies and procedures and at the direction of Lab Manager. Checks validity and accuracy of test results obtained by staff. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and equipment. Assists in the calibration and standardization of lab instruments.

Coordinates, assigns and reviews the work of section staff to ensure that required work is completed and adequate service is provided at the direction of Lab Manager in an accurate and efficient manner. Effectively makes work assignments, delegates responsibilities, sets priorities and redirects employees to other tasks as the need arises. Oversees the work of personnel and instructs them in the implementation of department operations, policies and procedures. Audits work of staff to ensure quality in all job duties. Ensures staff meets daily and monthly productivity levels. Assists manager in evaluating employees’ performance. Assists manager in developing corrective actions.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills to perform Medical Technologist (MT) functions and activities as needed. Performs tests for the Blood Bank. Specific tests for designated area(s) may include, but are not limited to Blood Bank – blood typing and antibody identification, etc. Prepares blood samples obtained for diagnostic testing in laboratory using specimens that are collected using the appropriate preservation or anticoagulant specified for the test procedure requested. Determines acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections or by recognizing abnormal/unusual results. Documents unacceptable specimens according to appropriate policy. Analyzes and reads lab test results and reports in timely manner. Records and reports clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) record results. Routes laboratory reports to patient’s area as needed.

Resolves complaints, conflicts or operational problems (on any shift). Informs manager of any problems or issues that cannot be resolved or require further attention.

Interacts and works collaboratively in a customer responsive and courteous manner in compliance with standards of conduct and promoting patient/customer satisfaction.

Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes. Adheres to established department policies, procedures, objectives, compliance/quality improvement with consideration given to risk management, infection control and patient safety practices.

Maintains equipment, instruments and supplies. Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor. Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Assists in the evaluation of new or modified techniques and methods.

Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve patient data and lab information system to enter and retrieve lab results.

Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).

Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow-up.

Completes surveys provided by the College of American Pathologist (CAP) to ensure that the requirements and standards are met in accordance to the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation (CLA).

Participates in the orientation and supervision of new blood bank staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment and services as part of their training.

Qualifications

Graduate of an approved Medical Technology program meeting the requirements set forth by CLIA and the state of Tennessee. Required

Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the neonate, infant, toddler, preschooler, school-age, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates. Required

MLT-Medical Lab Technician (ASCP) TN licensure as Medical Lab Technologist – Immunohematology or Medical Lab General Upon Hire Required

Minimum 4 years experience as a Medical Technologist with Blood Bank experience. Required
