Job DescriptionThe Surgical Technologist will scrub and prepare the sterile field for surgical procedures, care for instrumentation in an appropriate manner, and assist with the surgical procedures in accordance with hospital regulatory and professional standards.

Job Responsibilities

Efficiently and effectively assists physician with operative procedures

Anticipates surgeon/physician’s needs both in preparing for procedures and during procedure

Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations.

Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during the set up of surgical procedures.

Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.

Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas. Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets.

Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.

Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills.

Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.

Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staffs, patients, and employees. Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy.

Maintains designated certifications such as CPR, as offered by the center.

Complies with Policies and Procedures, and adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.

Orients new employees to the department, including the hospital's job descriptions, the policy and procedures, the availability and location of educational resources, and all safety precautions and emergency protocols.

Assists quality assurance/improvement and research activities and participates in developing process improvement plans.

Supports STs and CS in identifying recurring practice problems in specialty areas and reports to appropriate individual and participates in the problem resolution process.
