SUMMARY:We are currently seeking a

casual Pathologists' Assistant

to join our team. This casual role will work on an as-needed basis.

Purpose of position:

Under general direction, performs work of considerable difficulty performing, teaching, planning, evaluating, and coordinating activities in the Surgical Pathology and Autopsy Services section of the Laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:Performs specimen gross examination.Selects, dissects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination.Performs frozen sections.Performs gross and microscopic photography.Prepares and utilizes necessary materials for teaching, training, and evaluation of students (pathology residents, non-pathology residents, and medical students) and technical staff.Assists with and/or presents teaching conferences.Reviews autopsy authorization and patient information and proceeds accordingly.Performs autopsies as scheduled (examination, inspection, specimen collection, photography).Assists in the preparation of the preliminary anatomic diagnoses of the autopsy.Maintains specimen storage (both short and long term) to meet regulatory, legal and teaching requirements.Collects data for and assesses quality indicators for surgical pathology.Maintains reliability and functionality of all test systems as assigned.Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory agencies standards.Assists in the evaluation of equipment and instrumentation.Writes procedures and provides technical direction as needed to staff.Assists with billing and audits and assurance of compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS:Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in biological sciences and completion of formal Pathologists' Assistant training program.-OR-

An approved equivalent combination of education and three years or more of on-the-job training experience.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:

Customer service skills.

License/Certifications:

Certification or eligibility for certification as a Pathologists' Assistant by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), OR an approved equivalent.As a condition of employment, those hired "as eligible" must become certified within 24 months of hire.
