Job Duties:

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Groundwater Monitoring Team Lead. This position supervises a team of geologists to accomplish statewide groundwater-monitoring objectives, including data collection and analysis to understand the location, quantity, and quality of groundwater resources in Virginia. The Team Lead manages individual and team performance and assists the program manager with administrative tasks related to staffing, scheduling, tracking, reporting, budgeting, purchasing, and inventory. Communicates effectively with staff, management, other programs, landowners, permittees, contractors, and interagency partners. Coordinates team recordkeeping and data management. Conducts field work, including the collection of groundwater-level and groundwater-quality data from DEQ’s statewide network of 290+ monitoring wells. Processes data collected in the field, enters data into DEQ and USGS database systems, and reviews data entered by other staff. Operates and maintains observation wells, real-time water-level monitoring instrumentation, power tools, groundskeeping equipment, and global positioning system (GPS/GNSS) and surveying instruments. Documents the occurrence of groundwater-level declines, well interference, or aquifer depletion, to enable DEQ to address potential problems through management practices. Provides project oversight and management for drilling, installation, testing, and abandonment of deep wells (300+ feet). Assists in the collection of hydrogeological data from mud-rotary drill cuttings, wireline/rotosonic cores, and geophysical logging, primarily in the Coastal Plain of Virginia, including the Eastern Shore.

Minimum Qualifications:

Skills in supervising geological field work and related tasks.

Skills in training and motivating staff effectively.

Knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia procurement and inventory practices.

Knowledge of Virginia hydrogeology.

Skills in collecting groundwater-level measurements and groundwater samples, including from wells deeper than 300 feet.

Skills in operating and repairing powered equipment, including real-time monitoring instrumentation.

Skills in collecting hydrogeological data from well cuttings, cores, geophysical logs, and aquifer tests, including from wells deeper than 300 feet.

This position may require you to operate a state owned or leased vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver's license is required. Ability to operate vehicles in the field.

Additional Considerations:

Combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to major coursework in geology, hydrogeology, aqueous geochemistry, chemistry, statistics, natural and physical science, or a related field.

Availability to work across the entire Virginia Coastal Plain field area and at DEQ’s Piedmont Regional Office (Glen Allen).

Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently.

Ability to travel overnight as needed, sometimes multiple nights per month.

Skills in the collection and management of scientific field data with geospatial platforms and applications.
