Current vacancy is for a part-time Veterinarian II (.75 FTE) position with pro-rated salary ($6,616.89 - $8,042.86 monthly) and benefits, based on 0.75 FTE.Position Summary

To provide advanced, complex, routine, and emergency medical and surgical care for a wide variety of animal species in a municipal animal shelter; maintain a veterinary medical facility in the absence of the permitting Veterinarian; and perform related duties.Essential Functions

Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:Direct and perform the more complex laboratory screening and diagnosis, as well as basic and emergency medical treatment of all species of domestic animals received at the shelter, including those from partner agencies and privately owned animals participating in community health programs.Perform high volume spay/neuter surgery weekly on animals prior to adoption.Perform additional soft tissue surgery as needed to maintain flow through shelter or as requested by management.Oversee the health of impounded animals.Supervise staff on the visual monitoring of animals, including those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness or unusual behavior.Provide direct written, oral, or telephone health care instructions to the Registered Veterinary Technicians.Examine animals for signs of illness prior to adoption and/or surgery, and before release from Rabies Quarantine.Oversee the appropriate and safe use of pharmaceuticals, including those used for tranquilization and euthanasia in the shelter and in the field by Animal Control Officers.Maintain computerized medical records to track the care, condition, and disposition of animals.Supervise the ordering and maintenance of medical supplies and equipment.Provide direct oral, written, or telephone health care instructions or explanations to staff members, potential adopters, or owners of privately owned pets that the facility is providing health care for.Participate in investigations regarding the humane treatment of animals.Perform necropsy exams with comprehensive documentation, recommendations, or interpretations regarding findings when requested. This includes testifying in court, preparing written reports, and providing administrative support as needed.When appropriate, evaluate, recommend, and perform humane euthanasia of suffering or medically unhealthy animals of various species according to facility protocols and AVMA Euthanasia guidelines.Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.Meet or exceed continuing education requirements to maintain licensing.Perform other duties related to this position.Minimum Requirements:

Two years of practical experience in the field of veterinary medicine. Experience in high volume spay/neuter techniques is

required . Previous experience in shelter medicine is highly desirable. A degree in Veterinary Medicine from an accredited college or university is

required .License or Certificate

Possession of a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California is required at time of hire and must be maintained during employment in the classification.Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) controlled substance registration.Possession of a valid California driver's license.Apply on the City of Chula Vista website.
