GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Color Lab Leader is responsible for managing the custom color matching process for the hardwood plywood manufacturing plant. This position is responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction on custom color matched products through effective assessment, prioritization, improvement, and corrective actions. The position will assist in creating/maintaining process specifications, standards, practices and auditing methods to assure quality and efficiency. This position will support both operations and purchasing by meeting goals while interfacing with a variety of internal and external people/teams. Reporting to the Vice President of Manufacturing, the position will also have dotted line accountability to the Plant Manager for operating issues and Quality Manager for technical direction and support. The successful candidates primary focus will be developing color recipes in the lab and transferring the color match to the production line. Ideally the candidate will have experience with roll coating lines in the wood product sector, project management capabilities, and demonstrated technical knowledge. We are looking for a person who believes in teamwork, Lean thinking, customer focus, and continuous improvement. The Color Lab Leader manages two Color Lab Technicians.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Develop custom color formulations in the lab for recipe application on the production line.

Ensure existing color recipes meet product specifications.

Audit and support maintenance practices, inspection and testing of both product and industry specifications for materials and processes. Recommend corrective actions, controls, and opportunities.

Construct, support and/or maintain effective operating procedures, process specifications and policies, and operating guidelines to support process standardization and training (e.g. practices/outcomes, purchasing practices, and vendor capabilities/performance).

Maintain and improve inspection processes of inbound materials and internal processes that ensure product is meeting specifications, as well as identifying improvement opportunities.

Direct and support Lean Manufacturing and Work Team activities for the plant and lab.

Support employee work teams and leaders with guidance & expertise in problem solving, data collection, and Lean/continuous improvement.

Ensure that all workplace metrics are maintained in accordance with company policy.

Administer operator certification and other employee certification programs that may be developed.

Lead the Cause & Corrective Action process that addresses internal and external issues, determines root causes, and eliminates them from the operating system.

Providing feedback & support to vendors for continuous improvement of product development.

Lead and/or provide support in product and process development efforts.

Support Technical Sales in design & development of solutions to meet customer needs.

NECESSARY SKILLS

Experience in formulating custom color matches on hardwood plywood.

Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement of company and self.

Basic understanding of quality concepts, improvement methods, and metrics.

Basic working knowledge and application of Lean Manufacturing methods.

Demonstrated ability to be an innovative problem solver and critical thinker.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Capability to relate well to operating and management personnel in a team-based environment.

Professional computer skills including working knowledge of Word, Excel, etc.

Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and projects to completion while balancing competing priorities.

Perform basic financial analysis for evaluating proposals and valuing improvements.

Train and develop Color Lab Technicians.

DESIRED SKILLS:

Working knowledge of Process Control methods/techniques.

Knowledge of hardwood plywood manufacturing processes.

Successful experience managing on-time workflow and small teams.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Working experience in industrial lab and floor environment, or equivalent, is required.

Career goals should include management of people and processes within a manufacturing environment.

Engineering degree from an accredited college or university; completion of a Wood Products curriculum or the equivalent providing a strong background and interest in wood properties, characteristics, processing, and utilization.

Sufficient work experience with UV roll coating lines and color matching samples on hardwood plywood will be considered in-lieu of an academic degree.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Indoors

The position involves minimal travel to interface with customers/distributors and vendors.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $75,000.00 - $87,000.00 per year
