Closing Date: September 22, 2024Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer.

Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site.

Reporting to the Superintendent, Integrated Planning.

Responsibilities:

Champion Safety and Environmental Compliance: Be a courageous safety leader, promoting a culture of safety aligned with the company’s Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance (HSEC) commitments. Ensure adherence to all relevant regulations and standards.

Leadership and Team Development: Lead, mentor, and develop Geotechnical Engineers and EITs, promoting professional growth and ensuring the team has the necessary skills and knowledge to meet current and future demands.

Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Foster collaboration across departmental areas to support integrated plans that maximize value chain efficiency. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the mine geology, mine engineering, and mine operations teams both at Red Dog Operations and Teck Strategic Planning.

Risk Management: Identify and manage geotechnical risks on open pit and waste dumps operations, and projects, implementing robust risk mitigation strategies and ensuring compliance with all relevant safety standards and regulations.

Data Analysis and Communication: Review and analyze geotechnical data required for characterization, operation, and design of open pits and waste dumps. Effectively communicate geotechnical concepts and project progress to non-technical audiences.

Open Pit and Waste Dump Monitoring: Implement and oversee slope and dump monitoring programs and management plans to ensure the stability and safety of open pit and waste dump operations. Analyze monitoring data and develop action plans based on findings.

Bench and Inter-ramp Slope Performance: Implement a systematic assessment and documentation plan for bench and inter-ramp slope inspection, performance, and design reconciliation including aspects of blast damage and over and under digging of bench toe, face, and crest.

Technical Guidance: Guide numerical and analytical analysis as required for the design and assessment of geotechnical components and infrastructure for the site and Strategic Planning teams. Assist in the development of operating modes and targeted action response plans (TARP).

Vendor Management: Lead in the evaluation and management of consultants and vendors, including but not limited to the development of scopes of work, schedules, costing, and review of deliverables.

Policy and Practice Review: Review and audit Red Dog Operations ground support policies and practices in accordance with the Ground Control Management Plan – Slope and Dump Management Plan.

Operational Efficiency: Drive operational efficiencies within the geotechnical team, optimizing resource allocation, workflow processes, and technology utilization.

Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Mining, or Civil Engineering is required. A Master’s degree or Ph.D. is preferred.

Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation is preferred.

Twelve (12) years geotechnical experience, five (5) years being at a senior level, with extensive knowledge in all aspects of geotechnical applications to open pit mining. Experience should include geotechnical data analysis, site investigations, monitoring, project evaluation, and management.

Proven track record of managing and delivering complex geotechnical projects, on time and on budget.

Expert capabilities with mining geotechnical software such as Rocscience, FLAC, or GeoStudio.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex geotechnical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
