Job Description - Lead Medical Lab Scientist (24027790)AdventHealth Kissimmee is an 83-bed community-focused hospitalConveniently located near Walt Disney WorldThe team here is dedicated to bringing mission-focused, faith-based care to residents and visitors of Osceola and Orange CountiesAdventHealth Kissimmee has recently expanded to include a new medical office building, patient tower, and new main entranceShift: 06:00 - 1430 Monday thru Friday with Rotating WeekendsGENERAL SUMMARY:The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist performs various laboratory procedures in assigned areas as licensed/certified. Isresponsible for managing assigned selected aspects of laboratory processes or shifts, which may include workflow, qualitycontrol process, performance improvement activities, training of new employees, advanced problem solving for customersand coworkers, department equipment or computer maintenance and upgrades, writing/reviewing procedures, or othertasks assigned. Work customarily involves analytical testing of blood and/or human biological specimens. Analyticallaboratory testing generally requires a moderate to high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise inlicensed area(s). Depending on campus and department, various pre-and post-analytical work processes are included in thework duties customarily performed; on-call hours may also be required. Follows laboratory policies and procedures;maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and acceptsresponsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:•Assists with staff schedule preparation and workflow assignments as requested.•Assess competencies according to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations•Manages quality assessment and technical oversight, problem solving, scheduling, interviewing applicants, providesinput for staff performance, oversees training and competency evaluations•Assists the Laboratory management with special projects as assigned.•Reads, examines, and interprets complex test results. Serves as a resource and addresses complex tests/procedures•Manages instrument maintenance and troubleshooting practices•Leads quality control and quality assurance testing•Assists with data collection and special projects, as assigned•Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, which may include general and analyticalequipment maintenance, function checks and documentation; inventory control and supply stocking, specimen collectionas needed; biological specimen processing; cleaning and disinfection of selected or assigned laboratory equipment andspaces; quality control and calibration performance; and other pre-analytical activities•Performs all expected tests and analytical procedures for assigned department or work area efficiently and accurately,according to established procedures, performance standards, and departmental competency standards. Participates inproficiency testing, consistently adhering to federal and state regulations as well as Institutional policies•Performs post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, reporting results (including highly abnormal results) inaccordance with established procedures. Provides and acts on technical and support information related to the elements oflaboratory testing for all age groups, neonatal through geriatric patients•Provides orientation and training to new employees and medical technology students as needed, under the direction ofthe lab leadership. May act as a preceptor when teaching new staff and Students when assigned. Appropriately documentsorientation and training of new employees and medical technology students.•Provides guidance to technical and support staff, resolution to customer service issues within guidelines, and supporteducation to clinical staff as appropriate or requested. Facilitates workflow when necessary•Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemicalhandling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Employeejob duties may include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area;employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to includeproper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment•Participates in, and has knowledge of, laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities•Performs various support activities to facilitate operation of assigned department or work area•Participates in the evaluation of new laboratory techniques and procedures. Assists with data collection and specialprojects, as assigned. Assists in the documentation and submission of required laboratory, departmental, and staffstatistics/reports•May perform Supervisor duties during extended absence of leadership to ensure the smooth operation of the departmentor work area•Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE STRONGLY PREFERRED:•Technical skills and aptitudes related to the laboratory testing, procedures and processes performed in department orwork area assigned•Follows and ensures adherence of staff, to the Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of allapplicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; protects confidentiality of patient information andresults at all times•Ability to work independently and adapt to varying priorities, including directing workflow with minimal supervision•Ability to maintain equipment/records and perform quality assessment activities•Ability to educate and train new staff in medical laboratory settings•Able to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners and customers of variedbackgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner•Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
