Who We Are

The Department of General Services, Facilities Management Division (FM) is responsible for facility maintenance and management, including preventative maintenance, work order processing and reporting, vendor management and capital planning.

FM works behind the scenes to ensure the city's departments and agencies can function at their best. The FM Division staff is responsible for providing a full range of building services including plumbing, heating/cooling, electrical, painting, and maintenance of doors, windows, walls, ceilings, and floors, among other services. Through seven teams, FM is responsible for maintaining over 8,000,000 million square feet of buildings and structures in over 140 city owned and leased facilities, sites and structures.

What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $36.00 - $47.39/hour, based on experience and education. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location

In this position you can expect to work on site at the City and County Building at 1460 Cherokee St. Hours team members work vary between 630am-5pm. For your first 6 months the schedule is 830am-5pm.

What You'll Do

The Facilities Management Division within General Services is currently seeking a Lead HVAC Building Engineer to support and assist various facilities across the City and County of Denver. In this role, you will perform full performance level work in the daily operation, maintenance, preventative maintenance, and repair for facilities, including utilizing automated control systems to monitor, adjust and control various electrical and mechanical building systems. You will also be responsible for the daily operation of, and periodic preventative maintenance on, a facility's mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems, including: air handling units; domestic cool and hot water systems; heating and chill water systems; sump and sewage systems; diesel generators; and fire protection, pump and detection systems.

There will be daily interaction with tenants ranging from customers to employees of various agencies across the City and County of Denver. As such, having strong customer service and interpersonal skills will be crucial to success for this individual.

In addition, the Lead HVAC Building Engineer will:
  • Perform assigned lead work over staff responsible for the daily operation of, and periodic preventative maintenance on, facility's mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems; including air handling units, domestic cool and hot water systems, heating and chill water systems, sump and sewage systems, diesel generators, fuel management, and fire protection, pump and detection systems
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment and machinery which may include some fabrication
  • Inspects buildings, grounds, and equipment for unsafe or malfunctioning systems and conditions
  • Assists with installation and modification of building equipment systems
  • Oversees or performs repair, testing and troubleshooting of building equipment systems; evaluates and recommends equipment and service upgrades; Resolves problems and determines appropriate solutions
  • Maintains records and prepares reports; estimates materials, labor, and equipment costs
  • Assist supervisors and managers in planning and controlling annual budgets
  • Assists in the training of employees
  • Contributes to the development of performance goals, documents performance, provides performance feedback, and provides information to inform the formal performance evaluation
  • Responds orally to informal grievances and relays information to the supervisor, including documenting situations that may be cause for disciplinary action
  • Participates in snow removal duties which may include holidays and weekends, starting as early as 4am if necessary.
  • After 6 months you will join the standby rotation that occurs 1 week out of every ~6-8 weeks.
What You'll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
  • HVAC Journeyman License; Professional experience in troubleshooting and repairing large building HVAC systems in facilities exceeding 100,000 sq. ft. in size
  • Experience in operating Building Automation Systems (BAS) and previous professional experience utilizing Automated Work Order systems
  • Strong leadership skills; Experience in providing direction, guidance, and coaching to subordinates or team members and collaborate across teams and other agencies
  • Comfortable working independently while also being a team player
  • Driven, adaptable/flexible, a self-starter, and has a 'get it done' attitude
  • A process improvement/continuous improvement mindset
  • Desire for growth in the Agency; Desire to take on progressive responsibility
  • Current universal chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) License, BOMI designation such as Systems Maintenance Administrator (SMA) or Systems Maintenance Technician (SMT)
  • IFMA credential such as Facilities Management Profession (FMP) or Sustainability Facility Professional (SFP), LEED Credential, IREM or BOAC designation; Supervisor A Certification preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience Requirement: Four (4) years of experience in building operations, engineering and equipment and systems maintenance. One (1) year of building operations experience must include experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.
  • License/Certifications: This job requires driving. Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • By position, requires either a valid journey certificate of qualification or equivalency as required in trades specialty issued by the City and County of Denver or a valid journey license issued by the State of Colorado by the end of probationary period.
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
