Steel Project Engineer

A well-established structural steel fabrication company is looking for a motivated individual with experience in structural steel fabrication to join our team in a Project Engineer role. Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the below (training in all of these functions will be provided to the trainee during an intensive training period):

Company: Our client company fabricates and installs light structural steel and miscellaneous metal packages up to $5Million for the commercial construction industry. On the Crains Chicago list of Best places to work in 2023, their company has been built on a foundations of good relationships with their customer and employees. Friday's are a Flex day and can be taken remotely.  


  • Coordinate detailing team.
  • Finalize RFI's and Change orders with designers and detailers.
  • Ensure all drawings and models are stamped.
  • Determine and define the scope of work and deliverables.
  • Predict resources needed to complete a project.
  • Obtain necessary permits, approvals, and other regulatory prerequisites.
  • Manage costs in order to meet a budget.
  • Provide direction over contracts and subcontracts.
  • Coordinate production schedules and requirements with the shop.
  • Manage delivery schedule and activities.
  • Issue progress updates as needed regarding costs and timelines.
  • Ensure work is done in compliance with all relevant building and safety codes.
  • Select and manage subcontractor and supplier relationships.
  • Coordinate efforts across the entire project between architects, designers, engineers, and subcontractors.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • A 2-year degree in an engineering or construction-related field is preferred.
  • Ability to read and comprehend plans, specifications, addenda, bid materials, contracts, and related construction documents, with an emphasis on structural drawings and steel shop drawings. Additional training in these skills will be provided.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Excellent basic math and algebra skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
