This position primarily reports to the Assistant Director of the Educational Talent Search III program and also has responsibilities requiring them to report to the Director of the Educational Talent Search II program. The duties for both programs are the same; however, the target schools and participants differ. The Counselor 1 works with participants in the Educational Talent Search II/III programs in target schools throughout the Acadiana area. The Counselor 1 assists in recruiting eligible participants for the programs and provides resources to students in the program by meeting with middle and high school students, individually and in groups, to fulfill the objectives of the Educational Talent Search II/III grants. The Counselor is also responsible for maintaining accurate records on all students in their caseload and maintaining good rapport and working relationships with personnel in target schools and at the University. Counsel students (grades 6 and up) on a regular basis, individually and/or in groups, to help prepare them for post-secondary education.Responsibilities:Recruit eligible participants from target middle and high schools.Maintain accurate records on all students in the program and complete Annual Performance Report (APR) sections for student caseload.Administer surveys, tests, inventories, and other instruments needed for counseling students.Collect data and other information essential for counseling students regarding careers, self-improvement, and post-secondary educational goals.Assist with, conduct, and develop workshops and events that promote student retention and graduation.Assist in preparing and writing grant proposals.Establish and maintain good relationships with various university, junior high school, and high school personnel for referral, coordination, and evaluation purposes.Travel to target schools and other meetings as required.Annually attend state or regional conferences and 1 TRIO Training for Professional Development.Perform other duties as deemed necessary by Program Directors.Qualifications:Required Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, communications, psychology, social work, or a related field.Experience working with low-income/first generation/disabled students.Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in counseling, education, communications, psychology, social work, or a related field.Ability to relate well to students, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds, as well as University, junior high school, and high school personnel.Ability to employ effective individual and group counseling techniques.Written and oral communication skills.Familiarity with computer programs, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
