Position Title: Aerodynamics Compression Systems Senior Engineer

Location: Based out of Cheshire, CT

Reports to: Chief Engineer, Compressors

Salary Grade:

Job Description:

As an Aerodynamics Compression Systems Senior Engineer specializing in aerospace engines, you will have a crucial role in the design, analysis, and optimization of compression systems used in aircraft gas turbine engines. Your responsibilities will span from initial concept development through to final product delivery, ensuring that compression systems meet performance, efficiency, and reliability requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and Analysis:

Design compression system components including rotor airfoils, stator airfoils, flowpath and other aerodynamic elements. Utilize reduced order analysis tools (including meanline and throughflow), as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools to design and analyze compression system components including axial and centrifugal compressors, inlet ducts, diffusers, and bleed systems. Assess performance metrics including flow capacity, pressure ratio, efficiency, and stall margin.

Optimization:

Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams to optimize compression system designs for specific engine applications. Balance competing requirements such as performance, weight, cost, and manufacturability to achieve the best overall solution.

Modeling and Simulation:

Develop and validate analytical models to predict compression system behavior across a range of operating conditions. Use simulation tools to predict system response at off-design operation.

Testing Support:

Provide support for experimental testing of compression system components and full-scale engine prototypes. Analyze test data to validate models and refine design methodologies.

Performance Improvement:

Execute performance improvement through the application of advanced aerodynamic concepts, innovative technologies, and cutting-edge techniques. Under guidance, contribute to research projects aimed at developing next-generation compression system technologies.

Risk Assessment:

Conduct risk assessments to identify potential issues related to compression system design, performance, and operability. Under guidance, evaluate mitigation strategies to address identified risks and ensure engine reliability and safety.

Documentation and Reporting:

Prepare design documentation and presentations to communicate analysis results, design recommendations, and project status to internal stakeholders and customers.

The above listed responsibilities are not exhaustive and may evolve based on skill level, proficiency, and overall performance.

Physical Demands:

Some lifting, moving instrumentation, performing tests in various areas of the facility required. Must be able to lift, push, or pull at least 35 lbs. Regularly required to sit, stand, reach, bend, and move about our facility.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s and preferably Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Solid background in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, and turbomachinery. Good proficiency in CFD tools (e.g. Ansys CFX or Siemens StarCCM+ or others) and in leveraging them to drive design decisions. Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA or Siemens NX). 5-10 years of experience with engineering design and/or analysis of compression systems for gas turbine engines from a large OEM or supplier. Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for data analysis and automation. Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Joining our team as an Aerodynamics Compression Systems Senior Engineer offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge aerospace engine technology, shaping the future of aviation. If you are passionate about aerodynamics, turbomachinery, and pushing the boundaries of engineering excellence, we encourage you to apply and be part of our dynamic team.
