Position Description

This position announcement will be used to fill a full-time, exempt Deputy Director of Communications vacancy in the Office of the County Executive.

The Deputy Director of Communications will assist with the County Executive's communications strategy, supporting the dissemination of information across various platforms to diverse audiences. The role requires expertise in digital and traditional media, content creation, with a focus on engaging audiences through digital platforms and promoting county initiatives.

This is an “exempt” position that serves at the pleasure of the County Executive. This position reports to the Communications Director.

The pay range for this position is $97,205 - $115,000 based on qualifications.

Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Job Responsibilities:

Write, review, and edit various communications, including press releases, statements, social media posts, talking points, newsletters, video scripts, and speeches.

Work closely with the Director of Communications to develop and execute targeted communications strategies to promote county policies, events, initiatives, and programs.

Develop and design visually engaging materials for web, print, electronic, and social media distribution.

Work closely with the county’s cable television team to review, edit, and produce long and short-form video content and podcast recordings.

Support the Director of Communications in organizing media events and responding to media inquiries.

Assist with planning events that involve the County Executive.

Develop and execute ongoing strategies to increase digital media footprint and social media engagement.

Work closely with the Director of Communications to review and manage Public Information Act requests.

Other communications duties as assigned.

Communicate clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences using plain language, translating complex public policy issues into digestible formats.

Manage multiple tasks, work well under tight deadlines, and make decisions in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Create multimedia products such as social media graphics, videos, and infographics to effectively convey public policy information to the general public.

Produce and publish content that enhances social media engagement.

Gather and present analytics to improve the effectiveness of communications campaign performance.

Work efficiently with diverse personalities, both in team settings and individually, maintaining flexibility and adaptability.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience.

Experience with writing and graphic design for multimedia content creation.

Proficiency with Google Workspace products (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides).

Proficiency with design software like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or comparable software.

Strong writing, editing, and messaging skills.

Familiarity with social media platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, and web-based communications tools.
