Samsung AI Research Center (SAIC) located in Mountain View, CA and Toronto, Canada, is recruiting an accomplished individual to lead a team of scientists and engineers focused on camera and imaging technology. We are focused on using AI to push the state-of-the-art focused on in-camera processing, image enhancement and restoration, computational photography, and photo editing. Our goal is to contribute the world’s best smartphone camera and camera user experience.

Position Summary:

Samsung Research is looking for an outstanding Senior Research leader to lead our Camera Innovation Research (R&D) team. This role requires strong experience in leading research and development in camera imaging and computational photography with strong emphasis on AI / Gen AI and Machine Learning.

You must have a strong record of accomplishment in leading camera research (R&D) in an academic and/or industry setting with a portfolio of innovative products and/or technical contributions. Preferred experience includes research and development applying AI, Machine Learning, and Gen AI approaches to capture-time imaging and post-capture photo editing.

You will lead a camera and AI research team charged with developing solutions targeting next generation camera technology and algorithms. You will build and advance a pipeline of innovative research (R&D) projects with the objective to deploy on-device solutions. In achieving these goals, you will develop research excellence demonstrated by applying advanced technologies, creating new IP that adds to our IP portfolio, and enhance our research leadership through scientific publications and presentations in top-tier computer vision and imaging venues. In addition to internal research, you will also work with partners in overseas research centers in Asia and Europe.

In addition to technical capabilities, success in this position will require strong internal collaboration and external partnerships across a global network of stakeholder. This requires strong emotional intelligence, relationship and communication skills, persuasive presentation and writing skills, ability to build trust and lead through influence.

This will require hands-on leadership, modeling, and proactive coaching and mentorship.

Position Responsibilities:

Lead the Camera and Innovation Research team to develop and advance AI solutions for next generation camera imaging and photo editing.

Develop talent, provide inspirational leadership, coaching and mentorship

Develop advanced, state-of-the-art technologies and imaging features.

Foster a co-innovation model with strong internal collaboration and external partnerships

Ensure research excellence through impactful products, patents, and scientific publications.

Ensure a rich product pipeline that advances to commercialization.

Required Skills:

Ph.D. in a technical or health area (e.g. Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Color Science, or other related areas).

15+ years of leadership experience in leading research and development in camera solution and computational imaging.

A track record of developing innovative products with demonstrated success.

Strong technical knowledge and proficiency in AI, ML, and Gen AI/ML.

Ability to drive cutting-edge, product-oriented research and development in a hands-on manner.

Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, ability to present complex information in an understandable and compelling manner, and comfortable working with multi-disciplinary teams and matrixed organizational structures.

A record of research excellence and productivity (products, patents, publications).

Direct experience in working with camera ISPs and related imaging hardware.
