Ophthalmic Technician/Assistant

Retina & Uveitis Consultants of Maine is seeking a Full Time Ophthalmic Technician/Assistant. The technician will be the first point of contact the patient sees before the Ophthalmologist. It is our goal to make our patients feel comfortable and valued so it is vital for the technician to perform all required job duties accurately and efficiently. We are willing to train the right candidate for this role. A background in medical terminology and prior work experience in a medical office related to the eye is

preferred, but is not required.

Responsibilities:

Testing vision such as: visual acuity, confrontational visual field, pupil evaluation, Ishihara color test, and utilization of the Amsler Grid.

Effectively perform specialized imaging and diagnostic testing such as: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT),

Fundus Photos, obtaining Intraocular Pressures (IOP) utilizing Applanation Tonometry, and assisting with Intravenous Fluorescein Angiography.

Thoroughly document patient’s medical/ocular/surgical history, medications, and review of systems within the clinic’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Meticulously review patient charts and EMR systems to ensure completeness and accuracy.

Monitor patient flow within the office while escorting patients throughout the facility and directing the Ophthalmologist to and from examination rooms.

Assisting in clerical duties such as coordinating patient scheduling, checking in/out patients, answering and triaging phone calls, filing charts, and obtaining informed consent while explaining office procedures to the patients.

Administer eye drops for IOP checks, dilation, laser procedures, and preparing patients for ocular injections.

Prepare examination rooms, cleaning examination rooms, sanitizing equipment, and performing routine office cleaning.

Monitor and restock medication inventories and office supplies.

Assist and transcribe for the Ophthalmologist during examinations, laser surgery and intraocular procedures as directed by the physician.

Requirements:

Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, writing, typing, and computer skills.

Strong attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and self motivation.

Medical Terminology knowledge/Medical office experience.

Accepts constructive feedback openly.

High school diploma or equivalent. Associates or Bachelor degree preferred.

Pay:

$18- $20 per hour depending on experience. Paid biweekly.
