Summary / Objective

This position reports directly to the Purchasing Department. This person must be capable of self-managing regarding work prioritization and time management. The major function of this position is to unload, receive, label, and properly store boxed or bagged resin, additives, and color concentrates; pallets; boxed or palletized packaging materials such as cores, suspend packs, cradle packs, slip sheets, banding materials, shrink wrap materials; and other freight delivered to MSE.

Taking accurate inventory count of raw materials (e.g. boxed or bagged resin, color concentrates, and/or additives) and reporting this count to the Purchasing Manager is a responsibility that belongs to the Material Handler. Inventory counting requirements may include accurate counts of pallets by size, packaging materials by unit count, and other commonly warehoused materials is an important aspect of this position. Timely and accurate report completion is an important part of this job.

As a secondary responsibility, a Material Handler serves as a backup person for Resin Handlers or Shipping Clerks when so directed.

Essential Functions

•Unloading, receiving, labeling, and storing raw materials received by MSE truck, LTL shipment, or dedicated box truck shipment.

•Arranging, rearranging, and/or grouping materials for efficient storage in a manner that they can readily be found and/or consumed. To the extent possible, this includes an application of FIFO (first in, first out) principles of inventory management.

•Unloading and receiving cores & core buggies. Moving core buggies to the designated storage areas and "parking" the buggies where they can be found and accessed by the Production Utility (e.g., core cutter).

•Unloading, receiving, and storing pallets. Maintaining pallet storage areas neat and orderly, including areas containing pallets recovered from box/bag materials and/or damaged, not repairable pallets that are segregated from those used for finished goods.

•Repairing pallets with simple damage (e.g., broken top board, projecting nail, etc.) and returning repaired pallets to inventory.

•Segregating and returning pallets with broken stringer boards or other major defects to the pallet supplier. Loading defective pallets onto trailers for return to the supplier.

•Verifying current inventory levels of packaging materials at least once a week or as required by the purchasing department.

•Counting and turning in Resin and Additive Inventory reports to the Purchasing Manager each week.

•Counting monthly inventory of all boxed/bagged resin, color concentrates, and additives and delivering that count to Purchasing Manager on the first of each month (including January 1st each year).

•Performing other duties as assigned by the Purchasing Manager, which could include pumping resin or loading outbound trucks.

•You must comply with PPE requirements and Safety Rules.

PPE requirements and Safety Rules:

1. Eye protection is required everywhere in the plant.

2. Hearing protection is required.

3. Safety-toe shoes or boots are required everywhere in the plant.

4. Cut gloves are required to be worn on the opposite hand you use to hold a knife when cutting.

5. The maximum weight allowed to be lifted by one person is 80 pounds. Anything heavier requires the aid of another person, forklift, Big Joe, or roll handlers.

Job Knowledge, skills and abilities:

1. Language skills: The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. The ability to complete routine reports. The ability to write simple, understandable correspondence such as email or text messages. The ability to speak effectively with groups of customers and employees of the organization.

2. Mathematical Skills: The ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

3. Reasoning Ability: The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions given in written, verbal, or diagram form.

4. Computer/Phone Skills: Must have good telephone skills and interact well with others. Must have basic knowledge of current software packages, including MS Office, Epicor ERP, and Silo Track.

5. Communication Skills: Must be a self-starter who can work well with people at all levels, both in and out of the facility.

Competencies:

1. Safe operation of a forklift inside and outside of the MSE plant environment.

2. Safe unloading, stacking, handling, and storing boxed or bagged raw materials, color concentrates, additives, and other "packaged" materials. This includes grouping materials of the same or similar composition, application, or use together to ensure they are readily available for use.

3. Safe removal of core buggies from trucks and movement of them through the warehouse.

4. Use of a tape measure to an accuracy of ± 1/8".

5. Writing legibly in English to complete reports and communicate essential information necessary for the work to be done.

6. Use of a computer to initiate, complete, and store business essential reporting. This may entail the use of software such as MS Office programs, Epicor, and/or Silo Track.

7. Printing, reading, interpreting and using data from business-related software to complete job-related tasks.

8. Safe use of basic tools such as a hammer, pry bar, and nail gun for simple repairs to damaged pallets.

9. Operation of resin pumps, including the control panel settings, to maximize pumping rates from railcars.

10. Safe loading of finished goods on outbound trailers in accordance with established loading procedures or the directions from the Shipping department.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Work Environment:

This job operates in both a plant and office environment. The plant environment will include indoors in warehouses and delivery trailers and outdoors where pallets and other materials may be stored. The inside of warehouses is an ambient temperature environment that is largely affected by weather conditions. Jobs that are performed outdoors may require exposure to hot weather, cold weather, rain, freezing rain or snow, and wind.

Work done inside an office environment is climate-controlled. Office spaces are often shared or common spaces. Office equipment available to the employee may be shared.

Physical Demand:

This job requires the employee to mount and dismount the forklift throughout the day. Sitting may be required for periods of several hours when driving forklifts. Hand and foot movements necessary to safely operate the forklift are required for extended periods of time. Standing, bending, stooping, and reaching above head height may be required for up to two hours at a time. A Material Handler may be required to use a broom and a scoop from time to time. Pushing core buggies may be required on occasion.

When serving as a back up to the Resin Handler (e.g. pumping resin), the employee may be required to pull or lift resin transfer hoses weighing as much as 80 pounds. Lifting materials weighing more than 80 pounds requires assistance from another person, use of a forklift or Big Joe, or use of other lifting means. Walking along the rail spur, both on concrete and grey rock, may be required.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position, and general work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position requires occasional overtime and/or weekend/holiday work.

Education and Experience:

•High School Diploma or General Education Degree required.

•Experience in the material handling field is preferred.
