Position Overview:

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) will provide strategic leadership and direction for nursing and clinical services across the organization. The CNO will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of nursing care delivery, patient safety, and clinical outcomes across all departments and facilities.

Position Accountabilities:

Strategic Leadership:

Develop and implement strategic plans for nursing services in alignment with the organization's mission and goals.

Collaborate with senior management to integrate nursing services with overall patient care functions and operations.

Care Management and Utilization review with Finance/ Revenue Cycle partnership.

Growth and Access including best practice in capacity management and throughput for clinical areas of inpatient, emergency department, and perioperative.

Partner with Facilities, Property Services on Life Safety and maintenance and upkeep required to stay state-of-the-art.

Clinical Quality and Patient Safety:

Hardwiring best practices that results in an outstanding patient experience.

Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and quality improvement initiatives.

Innovation and implementation of new models of care (virtual care models, Value based models, Care plans, etc).

Team Management:

Recruitment and retention and Leadership Development for IP and ambulatory nursing.

Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth among nursing staff.

Financial Management:

Identify opportunities for revenue enhancement and cost containment within nursing operations.

Care Management and Utilization review with Finance/ Revenue Cycle partnership.

Community and Stakeholder Engagement:

Serve as a liaison with community organizations, professional associations, and regulatory agencies on matters related to nursing and patient care.

Build and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, including physicians, staff, patients, and donors.

Education/Licensure:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

Master’s degree in related field or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) required.

Master’s in Healthcare Administration (MHA), Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) preferred.

Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license required.

Certification in nursing administration preferred.

Experience:

Significant experience in nursing leadership roles, with a track record of progressively responsible positions (e.g., Nurse Manager, Director of Nursing).

Previous experience in developing and implementing strategic plans for nursing or healthcare services.

Proven ability to recruit, mentor, and lead nursing teams, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

Experience in leading quality improvement initiatives, monitoring clinical outcomes, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Demonstrated success in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, including physicians, staff, patients, and community organizations.

Knowledge:

Comprehensive understanding of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS), and compliance requirements.

Knowledge of evidence-based clinical practices, patient care standards, and healthcare technologies.

Understanding of healthcare financing, reimbursement models, and financial implications of nursing and clinical operations.

Familiarity with risk assessment and management strategies to mitigate clinical and operational risks.

Awareness of ethical principles in healthcare and the ability to promote ethical decision-making among staff.

Skills:

Ability to provide strategic direction, inspire a team, and foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with diverse stakeholders, including staff, patients, physicians, and community partners.

Strong analytical skills to assess complex situations, make informed decisions, and implement effective solutions.

Understanding of budgeting, financial reporting, and resource allocation within healthcare settings.

Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies and experience in driving clinical quality initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.

Ability to lead and manage organizational change initiatives, adapting to evolving healthcare trends and regulatory requirements.

Skill in developing and implementing strategic plans aligned with organizational goals and mission.

The primary office location of this position will be in Sacramento, CA or Emeryville, CA.

Pay Range is $250.30 to $338.64 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
