About the Office of the Attorney General:

The Attorney General is the state’s top lawyer and law enforcement official, protecting and serving the people and interests of Rhode Island through a broad range of duties. Every day, the Office’s attorneys fight to ensure the public safety of the state’s communities, improve the economic security of its citizens, safeguard the state’s spectacular natural resources, and restore the public’s trust in government. The Office’s attorneys prosecute complex and violent crimes but also functionally serve as one of the nation’s largest district attorney’s offices, prosecuting all felonies throughout the state.

Responsibilities:

The office is seeking a Deputy Communications Director to support the Communications Director in providing and producing information regarding the work of the Office to the public and the media. This position reports to the Communications Director and works in close collaboration with leadership, staff attorneys, policy directors, and other staff. The role will include participation in developing communication strategies, preparing communications materials, managing media relations, and developing contacts with media members and community leaders.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least three years’ experience within media relations, communications, news reporting, and/or related fields

Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with communications technologies

Strong leadership track record

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Exceptional time management and organizational skills

Familiarity with basic graphic design (Canva)

Works well both independently and as part of a team in dealing with reporters and various media outlets, ensuring accuracy of work under strict deadlines

Ability to distill sometimes complex legal information into compelling and understandable content for the public

Willingness to interact with State government officials and employees, media members, and members of the public

Proven ability to juggle multiple assignments and competing deadlines and priorities

Willingness to develop familiarity with legal terminology and the legal system

Flexibility to occasionally work outside of business hours
