Position Summary

The Office of Student Life and Engagement inspires student engagement and a sense of civility, commitment, consistency, and accountability. The Director of Student Life and Engagement is an innovative student-centered leader who can support, challenge, and engage students in campus life. The Director of Student Life and Engagement is a full-time, twelve-month position responsible for managing a comprehensive portfolio of campus and community programs, events, and services. The incumbent plays a pivotal role in student leadership development and works closely with students, faculty, and staff to initiate, plan, develop, and facilitate events and activities that support the academic mission of the College and the quality of student life on campus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for assessing student needs and developing innovative student-centered co-curricular programs, activities, and events that enhance the educational experiences of Spelman students.

Effectively leads, motivates, supervises, trains, and evaluates a team of staff consisting of Program Managers, Program Coordinator, and student staff.

Leads the development of multiple departmental budgets and engages in fiscally responsible decision-making processes and outcomes.

Assists the Vice-President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students with evaluating and managing the Student Activity Fee allocations.

Advises the Student Government Association, including officers, the executive committee, and the senate in all aspects of program selection, organizational development, leadership development, and civic engagement.

Responsible for developing a robust emerging leaders’ program that will complement the classroom and student life experiences, providing growth opportunities in personal, ethical, and organizational development; communication; teamwork; knowledge of leadership theory and change theory; multicultural competencies; and accountability through a series of workshops and conferences, culminating in a Leadership Certificate Program.

Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of college traditions such as New Student Orientation, Leadership Institute Retreat, Homecoming, Family Weekend, Miss Spelman Pageant, Class Elections, etc., in collaboration with students, staff, and faculty.

Reviews, revises, and maintains Student Life and Engagement policies and procedures.

Responsible for developing risk management strategies to reduce the College’s liability related to student organizations, programs, events, and activities.

Leads the development of print, electronic, and web media management, communications, marketing, and public relations.

Coordinates and/or participates in committees, task forces, and professional associations and conferences.

Provides regular evaluation, maintenance, and upkeep of the Manley College Center.

This position will be required to travel, work evenings, and weekends.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises the Student Life and Engagement Staff.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s required. The incumbent must have 3-5 years of experience in student leadership development, higher education, counseling, and/or a related field. Demonstrated experience leading, managing, and motivating professional and paraprofessional staff is required. The position requires a strong commitment to the mission of Spelman College and to the Division of Student Affairs. The incumbent must have a demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate with students, organizations, faculty, staff, parents, and alumnae, and the ability to apply student development theory and assessment/learning outcomes. This position also requires knowledge and understanding of state and local policies, procedures, regulations, and laws pertaining to higher education and risk management. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with budgeting and fiscal management is also required. The incumbent must be willing to work irregular and flexible hours.

The incumbent will possess unquestioned integrity, demonstrate a strong customer service orientation, and good relationship-building skills. In addition, the incumbent must possess a professional demeanor, exemplary communication and interpersonal skills, a high degree of self-direction, attention to detail, and demonstrated skills in effectively managing multiple priorities and challenging situations. The incumbent must have an understanding of the values and expectations of a highly selective, private, liberal arts college for women of African descent.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are required when presenting information and responding to inquiries or complaints from students, faculty, staff, parents, regulatory agencies, or members of the general community. Must be able to address matters with diplomacy and tact. Incumbent must be able to read and interpret various documents and financial reports.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have immediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and competency with using the internet and Outlook or similar software.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand, use hands and arms to handle, reach, and operate office equipment, talk, and hear.
