Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Director of International Engagement and Coordination leads the international strategic efforts, priorities, and initiatives of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine relating to the engagement of faculty, staff, and students in the international context. This individual is charged with creating the infrastructure and expertise to support schools international efforts, including creating community, collaborations, and outreach within the School of Medicine, its programs and initiatives in partnership with the university's Center for International Affairs and Office of Faculty International Engagement. The director provides leadership and vision to guide the school's efforts in developing and managing a faculty scholar program for incoming and outgoing international scholars, developing and maintaining a repository of international agreements, monitoring activity and engaging both faculty and student collaborations and placements to further promoting academic work that expands internationally, including the Brazil program, the World Medicine Pathway, the Rothman Family Fund, and other established or emerging global health programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Create and execute a strategic vision to enhance international engagement across the School of Medicine. This involves setting clear objectives to increase the number of faculty scholars (both domestic and international) and encouraging international collaborations. Develop an assessment plan to monitor and track success and manage the program budget responsibly by demonstrating fiscal responsibility. Collaborate with other departments to secure additional funding and capacity to expand the school's faculty international engagement programs. Evaluate and assess potential and existing partners to ensure that Case Western Reserve University's interests are protected and that international partnerships are mutually beneficial in concert with the Center for International Affairs as appropriate. (25%)

Facilitate international connections in areas where there is a high concentration of international activity and collaborate with the center for international affairs as appropriate. This includes managing the international agreement process and creating pathways for faculty and students to engage internationally, using the international repository. Additionally, the position requires offering advice to the school leadership on complex political relationships and interests. Organize and host international delegations visiting the medical school. (15%)

Collaborate closely with Graduate Education and Medical Education to provide leadership in international engagement efforts and collaborate on efforts. Collaborate closely with the Center for International Affairs and Office of Faculty International Engagement and Assistant Provost to effectively involve faculty in the internationalization of courses and curriculum. This includes designing and executing a collaborative online international learning program by providing opportunities to faculty, logistical support for collaborative online international learning programs, and facilitating international connections. Develop specific, measurable objectives for curriculum internationalization and collaborate with other offices within the school to offer programs and support to help faculty implement curricular internationalization efforts. (25%)

Cultivate a comprehensive outreach strategy that inspires faculty members to pursue Fulbright and other national and international grants that promote global engagement. Implement faculty-to-faculty mentoring programs, assist with major grant applicants and foster a community of distinguished scholars. Establish and maintain internal and external relationships, particularly with regional and international organizations. Represent the School of Medicine at international events and collaborate with institutions, governments, and consortia to further our mission. (10%)

Work with the School of Medicine Alumni office to connect international alums and alums living abroad as potential partners in expanding international reach with students and faculty. Support school constituents, including members of the advancement and alumni offices, as they interact with international school stakeholders. (10%)

Identify and promote funding programs that attract international scholars to come to Case Western Reserve University to engage in teaching and research. (10%)

CONTACTS

Department: Regular contact with School of Medicine leadership to advise and collaborate on internationalization efforts.

School: Regular contact with the Graduate Education, Medical Education, CTSI the Center for Global Health and Disease and DEIE and other relevant departments to provide leadership in international engagement efforts and collaborate on efforts.

University: Regular contact with Center for International Affairs staff on collaborative initiatives and exchanging of information. Frequent contact with key university leaders from other schools and centers.

External: Frequent contact with international university partners and alumni to develop relationships.

Students: Moderate interaction with international students and students in research and education programs or study abroad.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position will not supervise staff members.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 5 to 8 years of experience working in international education or related field. Education: Master's degree required; PhD or terminal degree preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Ability to collaborate with leaders and faculty across the school to provide support in moving an idea into reality.

Capacity to think strategically and to execute plans effectively, including the ability to conduct critical analysis and apply knowledge about the global competitiveness metrics.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to work diplomatically and foster collegiality that results in productive collaboration efforts.

Working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods, with proficiency working with related software.

Strong knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity to the needs of a culturally diverse student and faculty population.

Excellent organizational and personal and professional management skills.

Ability to meet consistent attendance.

Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

Typical office environment.

Hybrid Eligibility

This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangement up to two remote days per week at the discretion of the department. New employees may begin a hybrid schedule upon approval from the supervisor, successful completion of an orientation period and signing the remote work checklist certification form.
