JOB SPECIFICATION
BUS DRIVER
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, provides safe and efficient transportation in driving a bus or transportation vehicle over an assigned route in the transport of students, including field trips, athletic and other similar student activities; and performs related work as required.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Transportation Supervisor
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class receive general supervision from the Director of Transportation and Safety and participate in regular training programs as required by law. Incumbent's primary responsibility is safe and legal bus driving at all times; and operation of a vehicle in compliance with District policy, State codes and regulations and State Education Code Section 14203. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to checking, cleaning and some servicing of the bus. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all these duties.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:•Drives a bus or transportation vehicle over a designated route in accordance with a time schedule.•Transports students, staff and chaperons on field trips, student activities and other special events.•Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops.•Enforces District policies and procedures and maintains discipline on the bus or transportation vehicle.•Maintains vehicle cleanliness on a daily basis.•Performs minor vehicle maintenance checks and reports maintenance needs.•Services transportation vehicles, such as washing, fueling, checking oil and tires.•Prepares and submits daily and other reports as required.•Participates in District inservice programs as required.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledge of:•Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting students.•Safe driving practices.•First aid practices.•Supervision and control of student passengers.
Ability to:•Operate a transportation vehicle safely, exercise good judgment and extreme caution, and handle any emergencies that may arise.•Assume responsibility for supervising and maintaining order among students.•Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward students.•Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.•Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public.•Maintain strict confidentiality of student information and school business.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities; good driving record and a work history demonstrating dependability and reliability.
REQUIREMENTS•Possession of a current First Aid Certificate, in compliance with V.C. 12522(c).•Applicants hired must clear all restrictions within probationary period, except (6) First Aid Test Waived.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
Mature emotional stability, interest in and understanding of students, good health; flexibility and patience.
LICENSES•A valid California Commercial Driver License Class A or B with Endorsement P.•A valid California Special Driver Certificate (School Bus) with no Certificate Restrictions except (6) First Aide Test Waived, Must Comply 12522(c) V.C.
WORK YEAR: 185 Days
SALARY: Range 29
