Job Description
Purpose of Position:
Under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in consultation with bio-medical and other appropriate personnel, provide direct care to patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment in outpatient end stage renal disease (ESRD) facilities. Act in compliance with corporate, facility and all relevant regulatory policies.
Examples of Typical Tasks: 1. Prepare dialysis machine for treatment, including priming of dialyzer, performing machine alarm check and confirming machine pH, conductivity and temperature in accordance with formal written and oral directions and policies; appropriately document all findings. 2. Monitor equipment for proper functioning and ensure machine conductivity and temperature are maintained at all times. 3. Assure that sufficient supplies are available in treatment area. 4. Inspect and monitor the arteriovenous (AV) fistula or AV graft and report problem(s) to assigned RN. 5. Upon RN's assessment, initiate hemodialysis treatment. Obtain and document pre-treatment vital signs and weight. In collaboration with RN, determine amount of fluid to be removed in
order to reach patient's prescribed dry weight. Cannulate the AV fistula or AV graft as per policy and provider's prescription. 6. Observe, monitor and record patient's vital signs during treatment; identify abnormal changes and immediately report such results to assigned RN.
Minimum Qualifications 1. A High School diploma or a G.E.D; and 2. Successful completion of a Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician training course as evident by a valid certificate of completion or equivalent documentation; and 3. Certification issued by a national commercially available or state recognized Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician program must be obtained within 18 months of being hired into this title; and 4. Completion of an approved facility-based training program in the performance of basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
Special Notes: 1. Nationally available certification programs endorsed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Code of Federal Register - 494.140(e), include those of the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC), the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT), and the National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO). 2. An in-house certification and/or training program may be administered / conducted to assess and develop individuals assigned to this title; however, such internal efforts do not replace the CMS requirement that hemodialysis patient care technicians be nationally or state certified as outlined in 3 above. 3. This is a physically demanding position requiring employees to lift, carry, push and pull dialysis machines, related equipment and/or supplies which vary in weight and size, as well as stand and walk for extended periods of time. Employees must be able to carry out other physical demands that are essential to the job. 4. This title is for use in outpatient end stage renal disease (ESRD) facilities only.
