SUMMARY:
The Dosimetrist develops, optimizes, and monitors patient treatment plans and provides oversight to high level treatment procedures. Accurate calculations are required for all treatment plan implementation, including both external and brachytherapy. The medical Dosimetrist must have knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance in the management of cancer and other radio-responsive conditions and must provide input for the use of ancillary treatment devices and patient immobilization techniques and must accurately transfer and document treatment parameters into the electronic medical record. This position receives supervision from Service Line Director and clinical direction from the Radiation Oncologist and Physicist. In addition, the Dosimetrist supervises and monitors compliance with radiation safety standards of staff working in the department, in order to ensure a safe environment. Exercises professional judgment in the performances of procedures serving as a resource to radiation therapists. Provides patient care during imaging procedures and recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action and initiates life support measures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Designs treatment plan by means of computer /or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist' prescription.
* Coordinates treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated devices for radiation oncology treatment planning.
* Performs calculations for the accurate delivery of the Radiation Oncologist's prescribed dose, documents all pertinent information in the patient record, and verify the accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the Medical Physicist .
* Provides physics and technical support to the Medical physicist in radiation protection, qualitative machine calibrations using a system established by the Medical Physicist.
* Supervises the therapist staff in the implementation of the treatment plan.
* Ensures that departmental polices, decisions and actions demonstrate regard for the rights, dignity, respect and confidentiality of all patients, family members, visitors and TRMC personnel.
* Ensures that problems, complaints and regulation violations are investigated and appropriate action is taken to resolve issues within the requested time frame.
* Ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
* Responds to concerns from patient families, staff or physicians regarding patient care with appropriate follow up as needed.
* Participates in community activities and/or professional organizations in order to promote the service of the department and the image of the hospital.
* Protect's patients' rights by judiciously protecting information of a confidential nature. Follows policies related to information release, confidentiality, patient right, chart access and advance directives.
* Demonstrates strict adherence to all hospital safety policies, infection control policies, restraint policies, fire reporting, drill activities, and equipment maintenance.
* Accepts responsibility to establish and maintain conditions conducive to high quality patient care.
* Provides service with respect for human dignity and uniqueness of the patient unrestricted by consideration of socioeconomic status, personal attribute, or the nature of health problems.
* Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and facility regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
* Understands and adheres to compliance standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflicts of Interest Policy.
* Demonstrates age-specific skills as required by position.
* Offers suggestions on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs.
* Attends all mandatory education programs.
* Improves self-knowledge through voluntarily attending continuing education/certification classes.
* Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklists, skills labs, annual safety and health requirements as well as service excellence education hours requirements.
* Willing to cross-train in order to better assist co-workers and to provide maximum efficiency in department.
* Volunteers/participates on hospital committees, functions, and department projects.
* Manages resources effectively.
* Reports equipment in need of repair in order to extend life of equipment.
* Makes good use of time so as to not create needless overtime.

* Bachelor's Degree in Dosimetry
