Operational Risk Officer

First Merchants Bank is seeking an Operational Risk Officer to join our team! This position will implement, update, and manage key programs of the Bank's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Program. This includes, but is not limited to, Enterprise Risk Management / Dashboard Reporting, Key Risk Indicator (KRI) and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Program Management.

As part of this role you will:

  • Manage assigned Management / Dashboard Reports, including updating and documenting key risk and performance indicators, limits, and thresholds, and ensure accurate and timely reporting to the appropriate management committees such as the ERM Committee.
  • Collaborate with Executive and Senior Management, as well as the Line of Business managers on changes to policy, procedures and processes that impact the ERM Management / Dashboard Reports and/or Key Indicators (KPI/KRI) Management Program.
  • Provide analysis of risk trends and comparisons of risk indicators to established risk limits and thresholds - coordinating with risk owners to understand drivers and root cause of trends - and incorporate conclusions into the ERM Reports.
  • Review, revise, implement and maintain a standard Dashboard Reports based upon the ERM Framework.
  • Design, implement and maintain a KRI and KPI program.
  • Design, implement and manage the ERM Reporting Module and the KRI/KPI Module within the Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) platform. This would include review, update, and revision of the current methodologies, ensuring the platform is constructed to bring efficiency and effectiveness for all users.
  • Assist in the annual review or update of key Governance documents.
  • Assist in the ERM Working Group activities, initiatives, and deliverables as assigned.
  • Participate in the Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) Governance Cycle requirements.
  • Collect data on economic, market, peer, and industry trends to assist in identifying potential emerging risks to the bank.
  • Remain abreast of regulatory requirements and mature industry practices relating to enterprise risk management.
  • Assist in development/oversight of key operational risk programs as assigned.


In order to be successful in this position, we require the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field OR associate degree/ two years of college + two (2) years of related work/military experience OR four (4) years of related work/military experience (plus any additional required experience).
  • A minimum of three (3) years working in the Risk Management environment.
  • Expert in Microsoft Excel.


The following would be a plus:

  • CERP or CRCM designation.
  • Experience using RSA Archer.
