Job Summary:

As the Head of Legal you will manage SkillsWave's employment related legal matters, litigation matters and other legal matters as they arise and advise the President and Executive Chairman as necessary. You will also assist in procurement matters and manage various organizational compliance programs. You will act as a facilitator and trusted advisor to the business by providing practical legal advice across internal stakeholder groups.

This role requires a strategic thinker with strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment as we are a scale-up organization. This role also requires a highly motivated hands-on leader that will be an individual contributor from day one, and eventually, take the lead and grow a team as the business grows.

This role is hybrid. The individual must be able to travel via their own vehicle to the SkillsWave office located within the Kitchener-Waterloo region. The current office location for SkillsWave is a co-working space at Catalyst Commons (137 Glasgow Street) but this location may change at any time based on company growth. Additional travel may be required to meet with vendors, clients and prospects inside/outside of Canada.

How Will I Make an Impact?
  • Working closely with the President to provide legal advice to the Executive Chairman and the senior leadership team on employment matters, litigation, corporate governance, corporate finance, securities and mergers & acquisitions.
  • Developing, drafting, revising, administering, implementing and interpreting the Company's compliance policies, procedures and programs.
  • Advising the People and Culture team on a range of employment law matters.
  • Liaising with regulatory bodies and government authorities as required.
  • Managing litigation, including eDiscovery and external litigation counsel.
  • Cross-functional project management.
  • Assist on an as-needed basis with drafting and reviewing agreements, including partnership, non-disclosure, licence (inbound and outbound) and similar agreements.

Competencies:
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong appreciation of the nuances of giving legal advice from an in-house perspective versus a private practice perspective.
  • Technologically-inclined, organized, detail-oriented and capable of working independently.
  • Hard working, highly committed, reliable and flexible.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in fast-paced, multiple-project environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Project management skills and the ability to work cross-functionally.

Skills
  • Called to the bar in Canada or the United States.
  • Minimum 6+ years of relevant experience as a corporate lawyer.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience drafting and reviewing contract terms and conditions, including liability, indemnity and IP considerations, government regulations and procurement practices.
  • Transaction management experience an asset.
  • International experience an asset.

Suggested Qualifications/Experience:
  • J.D. or LL.B degree

The salary for this position is in the range of $120,000 to $150,000 and is based on the minimum level of work experience and qualifications as listed above. This salaried position requires a minimum of 40 hours of work per week. More senior candidates may apply but note that the salary for the position has been set at the range listed.
