Your Opportunity
Stantec is looking to fill the role of a mid-level Substation Engineer. Reporting to the Substation Manager, this position offers you the opportunity to work in a project team environment with other engineers and designers involved in the detailed electrical design and project management of high voltage substation projects.
The successful candidate should have experience in the area of air-insulated substation (AIS) engineering and design (gas-insulated substation (GIS) experience is a plus) from the 13 kV to 500 kV levels, with an understanding of the substation design process, substation materials and equipment and related electrical design studies such as electrical clearance, grounding, lightning, voltage drop, and rigid bus design. Experience with work planning, coordination of designers and drafters, reporting, cost estimating and scheduling are also important.

Your Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for developing all aspects of high-voltage (HV) substation physical engineering and design
- Prepare reports that present technical and project information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements
- Prepare Electrical Physical design packages consisting of One-line Diagrams, Site Plans, Electrical Plans & Sections, Grounding Plans & Details, Conduit Plans & Details, Control Building Plans & Details, Lighting Plans, Lightning Protection Plans and bills of materials (BOM).
- Coordinate with designers and engineers of other disciplines to complete deliverables
- Interpret and incorporate vendor information into design deliverables
- Perform QA/QC of electrical engineering design packages
- Provide regular progress updates related to deliverables on projects
- Develop proposals and engineering level-of-effort (LOE) estimates and analysis
- Knowledge or experience with substation Protection & Control design and/or concepts is a plus

- Able to demonstrate solid technical understanding through written and verbal communication
- Ability to visualize and evaluate equipment details, phase-to-ground and phase-to-phase clearances, and drawing relationships
- Solid understanding of substation grounding, lightning protection, and illumination studies (strongly preferred)
- Experience in the preparation of technical specifications for high voltage electrical equipment
- Ability to manage and deliver Physical Engineering deliverables in accordance with project schedules and budgets
- Ability to work closely with Drafters, Designers, Engineers and Leads and Project Managers to meet with project timelines for engineering deliverables
- Ability to understand client specific requirements, standards and specifications; and applicable codes & regulations for preparing physical electrical packages
- Ability to travel for project related meetings and site visits. Travel is not anticipated to be more often than 5 days per month
Education and Experience
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (ABET-accredited school preferred) or related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience in utility AIS HV substation design.
- P.E. license strongly preferred or pursuing obtaining a PE license
- Proficient with Microsoft (MS) Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro and/or Bluebeam
- Experience with site visits to capture technical data needed for engineering estimates and execution of related substation design work
- Experience in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD strongly preferred
- Experience in Grounding Analysis software such as WinIGS and/or CDEGS is strongly preferred
